Notorious serial killer Ted Bundy has been found responsible through DNA evidence for the 1974 murder of 17-year-old Utah girl Melissa Ann Smith, state authorities announced at a Tuesday news conference.
The breakthrough in Smith’s cold case follows confirmations by Utah County detectives earlier in April that Bundy also killed another 17-year-old Utah girl, Laura Ann Aime, in the same year. While Bundy confessed to killing Laura during a series of admissions prior to his 1989 execution, physical evidence linking him directly to the crimes remained unverified until recent advancements in genetic testing.
Connecting Decades-Old Evidence Through DNA
Laura Aime vanished after attending a Halloween party in 1974, and her severely beaten body was discovered in late November of that year. It was not until earlier this year that new DNA testing substantiated Bundy’s prior confessions. Law enforcement officials confirmed that bodily fluid extracted from Laura’s remains matched Bundy’s known DNA profile.

That discovery immediately propelled the investigation into Melissa Ann Smith forward. Authorities stated that the Y-STR DNA profile recovered from Laura’s body matched the genetic profile found on Smith’s remains, sealing the connection between the two decades-old homicides.
Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera emphasized the enduring value of forensic retention during Tuesday’s briefing.
“This case demonstrates the importance of preserving evidence, even when decades have passed,” said Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera on Tuesday. “We have the ability to take a look at these cases again and again.”
The Scope of Bundy’s 1970s Rampage
Between 1974 and 1978, Bundy assaulted and murdered at least 30 women across multiple states. His execution in Florida in 1989 brought a legal end to his life, but the ripple effects of his crimes have left open investigations lingering for generations.
“The voices and cherished memories of Melissa Ann Smith and Laura Ann Aime and others involved in these cases ring louder than the hate and sedition of the one that took their lives,” said Mike Reynolds, a sergeant with the Utah County sheriff’s office. “With every case closure may we stomp the memory of Ted Bundy out.”
