Nine Perfect Lives Sign to AD 93 and Release Debut Single Die

Brooklyn-based alternative duo Nine Perfect Lives—formed by Helena Straight and Stella Wave of the rock band Hello Mary—have officially signed to the London label AD 93 and released their debut single, “Die,” accompanied by a music video directed by Milo Hume.

The project emerged from a period of geographic separation that tested the close dynamic of the two musicians, who have collaborated since they were teenagers over the past seven years. While Straight relocated to Los Angeles, Wave remained in Brooklyn. Forced to work remotely, the pair began sending demos back and forth, refining each other’s work across the country.

“I started writing ‘Die’ when I was living in LA and Stella was still in Brooklyn,” Helena Straight said. “We made deliberate efforts to stay in touch and work on music but I wasn’t yet sure when or if I was moving back to New York. I wrote and recorded a demo of the song in a few hours and realized that it was a direct response to Stella’s heartbreak and confusion about my impulsive move across the country. Fleshing out the demo together felt effortless and reinforced our creative bond which was compromised in the context of Hello Mary at that time.”

The resulting track blends art-rock experimentation with intimate folk songwriting, utilizing unique song structures, complex drumbeats, and vocal harmonies. As the two accumulated a new body of remote recordings, they realized the material belonged to a different world than Hello Mary’s trajectory, presenting an opportunity to establish a standalone project showcasing their current artistry.
