Dolly Parton Laid to Rest in Private Nashville Funeral

Interred beside her late husband Carl Dean, the 80-year-old legend left behind a monumental legacy in music and philanthropy following her death on August 25.

The private gathering took place at Nashville’s largest cemetery, Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum. Parton was buried alongside her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82.

Ahead of her passing, the singer had ensured her final arrangements reflected her personal history. A bronze crypt plate mounted at the mausoleum bore her name alongside her husband’s, complete with an engraving depicting her childhood home in Sevier County, Tennessee. The cemetery also serves as the final resting place for several country music figures and Parton’s former mentor, Porter Wagoner, for whom she wrote I Will Always Love You as a professional farewell when she launched her solo career in 1973.

To accommodate fans wishing to pay their respects, the cemetery set out velvet ropes and guest books. Meanwhile, official channels encouraged admirers around the world to honor her memory online by tagging posts on social media. In lieu of floral tributes, the family requested that donations be directed to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Family Remembrances and Grand Ole Opry Tributes

Family members shared deeply personal reflections following the private service. Parton’s great-niece, Lainey Parton, published an emotional tribute on Instagram detailing the profound personal impact the music icon had on her life and career.

Lainey recalled recording a song titled The Orchard with Parton for the 2024 album Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables. Another niece, Jada Star, took the stage at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry during a dedicated tribute concert on Saturday night to perform the track.

Unfulfilled Projects and the Planned Dollyfest

In addition to these commercial projects, Parton’s estate announced Dollyfest, a two-day festival to be held in Nashville and London in 2027.

Airports, Flags, and Continuing Philanthropic Missions

Public honors mounted across the United States following the news of her death. President Trump ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff through September 1, while Tennessee Governor Bill Lee instructed state flags to be lowered. Furthermore, Governor Lee and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority announced plans to rename Nashville International Airport in her honor, with the airport authority scheduling a formal vote on the proposal for September 17.
