Eagles rookies provide bright spots during historic offensive drought

The Eagles offense struggles to cross the 350-yard threshold

The Philadelphia Eagles have failed to reach 350 net yards of offense in all eight games played this season, according to a report from NBC Sports Philadelphia. This marks the first time in more than half a century that the franchise has opened a season with eight consecutive games under that yardage mark. The last time such a drought occurred was during the first 11 games of the 1971 season, when the team’s offensive peak was just 315 yards in a loss to the Bengals.

This offensive stagnation is part of a broader downward trend. The team is currently mired in a six-game losing streak, and their offensive production is hitting historic lows. During this six-game span, the Eagles have averaged just 244 yards per game. That figure represents the team’s worst six-game stretch in 27 years, trailing only the 241 yards per game averaged during Andy Reid’s inaugural season in 1999.

The statistical decline is mirrored by a widening gap in scoring. Through eight games, the Eagles have been outscored by a total of 65 points. This is the largest margin of being outscored in the first eight games of a season since 1998, when the deficit reached 117 points. Currently, the only NFL team with a larger negative point differential is the 0-8 Los Angeles Chargers, who have been outscored by 76 points.

Rookie bright spots amid a historic scoring deficit

While the team’s overall trajectory is downward, two rookies have provided the only significant statistical highlights in recent weeks. Makai Lemon and Eli Stowers both surpassed 50 receiving yards in the most recent matchup. This was only the second time in 36 years that two Eagles rookies have recorded over 50 receiving yards in the same game. The last instance occurred in 2021, when DeVonta Smith recorded 122 yards and Kenny Gainwell had 58 in a loss to the Chiefs.

Lemon, in particular, is putting up numbers that place him near the top of the NFL rookie class. He currently has 31 catches, which ranks third among all NFL rookies, trailing only K.C. Concepcion of the Browns with 33 and Germie Bernard of the Steelers with 32. If he maintains his current pace, Lemon is projected to finish with 65 catches, a total that would rank third in Eagles franchise history for a rookie, behind Keith Jackson’s 81 in 1988 and Jordan Matthews’ 67 in 2014. Additionally, Lemon has tied the franchise record for consecutive games by a rookie with six or more receptions, joining a list that includes Jeremy Maclin and DeVonta Smith.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jalen Carter continues to climb the franchise leaderboards. With his fourth sack on Sunday night, Carter has reached 11.5 career sacks, tying him for the seventh-most career sacks by an Eagles interior lineman. He now sits just 1.5 sacks behind Javon Hargrave for sixth place on that list. Meanwhile, Nolan Smith has already surpassed his total of 3.0 sacks from all of last season, recording four sacks on Sunday night alone.

Historical precedents for the current losing streak

The severity of the Eagles’ current situation is underscored by how they are losing. This season marks the first time since 1970 that the team has lost three games in a single season by 11 or more points to teams with losing records. Furthermore, the team has lost three consecutive games by at least 11 points while allowing at least 25 points in each, a feat that has only happened twice before in the last 50 years, in 2012 and 2016.

The team’s inability to hold early leads has also become a recurring theme. In their most recent game, the Eagles held a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before ultimately losing 27-10. This was the first time in franchise history that the Eagles led by 10 points in the first quarter and failed to score again for the remainder of the game.

The defensive unit also saw a notable individual milestone, albeit in a difficult context. Rasul Douglas recorded an interception near the end of Sunday’s game, marking the 23rd of his career. He is one of only three Eagles drafted in the last 30 years to reach at least 23 career interceptions, joining Sheldon Brown and Jordan Poyer. However, as the team continues to fall, the margin between individual success and team failure grows wider.

The current six-game slide has seen the Eagles lose to the Panthers, Cowboys, and Commanders, all while struggling to maintain offensive momentum. The team’s overall yardage average of 265 yards per game through eight contests is their lowest since 1999.
