The Elmira College women’s basketball team made the trip to Boston, Massachusetts, for their season opener against Emerson College, running into an early deficit they could not quite erase despite a strong push in the fourth quarter. The Soaring Eagles fell to the Lions 63-42, dropping the opening contest of their new campaign before heading to Milton for a quick turnaround against Curry College.
Chasing an Early Deficit in Boston
Emerson grabbed control of the game right from the opening tip, building a 5-0 lead before Aynsley Belcher put EC on the board with a jumper. Kyle Hook added a free throw, but the Lions kept pressing to close the first quarter with a 9-3 advantage. Elmira tried to find some offensive rhythm in the second frame when Hook opened with a layup and Sophia Ward followed with a basket and a free throw to slice the gap to 9-8. Yet, Emerson answered with a scoring run, sending the game into halftime with a 29-14 score.
The home side kept up that momentum coming out of the break, extending their lead to 36-14 before Hannah Nichols sank a three-pointer. Hook added a jumper, and Nichols finished a layup to help Elmira reach 19 points, but Emerson held a 44-24 cushion heading into the final quarter.
A Fourth-Quarter Push Falls Short
Elmira put together its most productive offensive stretch of the night in the fourth quarter, racking up 18 points. Haley Mosch opened the period with a jumper, Gianna Savoca dropped in a basket, and Nichols hit another three-pointer to cut the deficit down to 13 points at 44-31. Mosch continued to find room with another jumper, Emma Ryan hit a pair of free throws, and Ryan later converted an and one layup on a fast-break opportunity. Hook added two more from the stripe, and Mallory Shultz closed out the scoring with a late layup. Even with that late offensive spark, Emerson maintained control to secure the 63-42 victory.
Offensively, Elmira shared the load as Nichols and Mosch paced the squad with eight points apiece. Nichols connected on two three-pointers and collected three steals, while Mosch grabbed five rebounds and handed out an assist. Hook also finished with eight points, shooting 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. Ryan and Ward each contributed five points, with Ward adding two assists. On the glass, Belcher led the Soaring Eagles with six rebounds, and Savoca pulled down five.
