“Someone is banging downstairs”
“I was in the office, and I heard someone banging on the window trying to get in, and I ran,” the first employee said. “They’re down in the basement. I don’t know how they got in. They were cracking the window.”
In May at the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, those frantic words captured the opening moments of a break-in as two employees heard a crowbar smashing a window and immediately ran to another floor for safety, according to 911 calls obtained by AZ Family.
Fenris Lu Arrested for Breaking into Basement Morgue
Police arrested 31-year-old Fenris Lu at the scene after he allegedly broke into the basement morgue where bodies are stored. According to investigators, Lu broke the seal on 11 body bags and had sexual contact with four of them.
Real-Time Emergency Calls
Each of the two 911 calls lasted a little more than a minute. The first employee told the dispatcher she was just feet away when the window was being cracked.
A second employee also dialed 911 while the break-in unfolded in real time, reporting noises from the facility’s special procedures room. When the dispatcher asked if the caller could see the intruder, the employee responded that only the cracked window was visible.
Lu Faces Felony Charges Amid Mental Health Struggles
Lu is currently facing several felony charges and is being held on $500,000 bail. While law enforcement has not released a formal motive for the break-in, AZ Family spoke with a close friend of Lu in May who noted that he had struggled with mental health issues and drug abuse.
