Fire guts HQ of Miss. police dept. that fatally shot Kohen Wiley, 1, in Walmart parking lot

Early Morning Blaze Strikes Senatobia Headquarters

A fast-moving fire tore through the Senatobia Police Department headquarters at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Located 40 miles south of Memphis, the facility sustained damage, though the department confirmed it remains fully operational for local police services.

A Department Under Fire

The blaze strikes an agency already reeling from a summer of intense public scrutiny. In June, an officer fatally shot 1-year-old Kohen Wiley during a shoplifting investigation at a local Walmart. Officers had suspected the child’s mother, Vellesiya Wiley, and a friend, Latoya Ferrell, of stealing diapers and baby clothes. According to police accounts, the driver allegedly moved the vehicle toward officers, leading one to open fire. While the mother was unhurt, Ferrell sustained serious injuries. Relatives have publicly disputed the shoplifting allegations, and no charges have been filed against either woman.

Leadership Turmoil and Investigations

The June shooting triggered significant friction and subsequent leadership upheaval. The officer involved resigned earlier this month, following a probe by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office that cleared him of criminal wrongdoing. By September, police chief Harold Vanderford was fired after reports surfaced that he used racist slurs in private text messages.

Federal Probe Into Saturday’s Incident

Investigators have not yet determined what ignited the fire. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now probing the circumstances alongside local agencies.

“Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, certain details cannot be released at this time,” Hampton added. “We understand the concerns this incident may raise within our community and want to reassure our citizens that we remain dedicated to fulfilling our responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, and transparency.”
