Foo Fighters Surface Gerry Rafferty Cover for Streaming Audiences
Foo Fighters have released a cover of Gerry Rafferty’s 1978 classic Baker Street, which has been largely missing from Spotify and other streaming platforms due to licensing and distribution limitations.

Dave Grohl and company originally laid down the track for BBC Radio One’s Evening Session in April 1997. Later that same year, in November 1997, the cover found its first physical release on a limited-edition EP bundled with the album The Colour And The Shape. That initial pressing also featured the band’s interpretations of tracks by Killing Joke, Prince, and Gary Numan.
Over the following decades, the recording popped up intermittently. It appeared on select versions of the “My Hero” single the subsequent year, resurfaced for the 10th-anniversary editions of The Colour And The Shape in 2007, and eventually landed on Medium Rare, the Record Store Day covers compilation released in 2010. Despite those physical releases, the track remained largely absent from Spotify and other major digital audio services due to persistent licensing bottlenecks.
Recent Live Debuts and Upcoming Tour Stops
The studio cover has returned to public prominence alongside a series of recent live appearances. The band performed the song during their four-night residency on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Earlier that month, Grohl also performed “Baker Street” at an event honoring late Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak at the Silverlake Conservatory in Los Angeles. During that performance, Grohl dedicated the track to “all the people who were around in the 70s listening to AM radio when their mom and dad drove them around in their Ford Maverick.”
The song’s return precedes a dense international touring schedule. Foo Fighters will launch a stadium tour of Australia next week, followed by two dates in New Zealand in January, and subsequent stops in India and South America.
