Williamson County Parent Arrested After Rivalry Week Prank Turns Violent
What started as a routine high school rivalry week prank escalated into a violent confrontation when a Williamson County parent allegedly punched a teenager through a car window, according to an on-air report by News Channel 5.
Kristin and Phil Thornton stated that their son, a junior at Independence High School, drove with a friend to the home of a Summit High School student on a Wednesday night. The vehicle contained no weapons, only toilet paper.
“Was he gonna do it? Maybe. But he hadn’t,” Kristin Thornton told News Channel 5.
The situation quickly deteriorated into what the family described as a scene from a horror movie. According to the parents, a group of 12 to 15 people brandishing baseball bats chased their son down the street as he attempted to leave the Thompson’s Station neighborhood.
When the Thorntons received the initial phone call from their son, he told them his windows were smashed and that a grown adult had struck him in the face before police arrived at the scene.
The Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the neighborhood to piece together the timeline while the family surveyed the damage. Investigators found the back windshield of the teenager’s car beaten in with baseball bats. The teen sustained bumps and bruises to his face after an adult allegedly reached through the vehicle window and struck him.
Following a hospital visit, the victim reenacted the incident for a sheriff’s deputy. Kristin Thornton noted that video footage captured an individual pulling their fist back and punching the minor through the car window.
Deputies subsequently booked Thomas Hutchinson into jail on an assault charge. Representatives for Hutchinson did not respond to requests for comment from News Channel 5.
“Punching someone in a vehicle is already cowardly as it is. There’s no way of self-defense—absolutely no way of self-defense—being surrounded by minors and/or your own children,” Phil Thornton told News Channel 5.
School District Response and Community Impact
Williamson County Schools announced an increased police presence at the scheduled rivalry game following the incident. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the confrontation and is reviewing video footage.
The Thorntons stated they shared their account to encourage communication rather than violence and urged witnesses with video or additional information to contact authorities.
