Idaho awarded nearly $186 million for rural health Transformation

“For many Idaho families — especially in rural areas — affordable, accessible health care is a real concern,” Gov. Brad Little said regarding a new federal investment in the state’s medical infrastructure.

The Trump Administration announced on Wednesday that Idaho has been awarded nearly $186 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program. The funding is dedicated to improving healthcare access in the state’s rural regions and follows Idaho’s commitment of its $185.9 million award for fiscal year 2026.

Idaho receives $186M in rural healthcare funding

2025 Act Provides $50 Billion for Rural Healthcare

The program was created by the 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which provided $50 billion for the Rural Healthcare Transformation Program. These funds are being distributed in $10 billion increments through 2030. According to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), half of the funding pool is divided equally among states, while the remaining half is distributed based on the financial health of rural hospitals and the rurality of a state’s health system.

State officials noted that the current award was contingent on the allocation of previous funds; failure to use the provided amounts could result in funding being redirected to other states or a reduction in future awards.

Planned Healthcare Initiatives

The award will support several specific healthcare goals, including:

  • Improving rural healthcare facilities and equipment.
  • Funding cybersecurity systems and telehealth for rural providers.
  • Building programs for maternal and child health, behavioral health, and chronic disease.
  • Strengthening the physician workforce and assessing healthcare shortages.
  • Improving emergency communications.

Idaho Officials Praise Rural Health Care Investment

Idaho’s congressional delegation, all of whom voted for the spending legislation, praised the investment. U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson described the initiative as the largest investment in rural health care in American history, while U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo stated the program will “permanently increase access to high-quality health care across Idaho.” U.S. Rep. Russ Fulcher called the funding an “important investment in rural Idaho.”

At the state level, the Rural Health Transformation Committee, which includes several legislators, recently voted to move funds away from a rural school health program. The committee is expected to discuss how to reallocate the newest award during its next meeting on Nov. 19.

U.S. Sen. Jim Risch emphasized the necessity of the program, stating, “This funding will help ensure Idahoans in every corner of the state have the resources they need to keep their families healthy.”
