Illinois Man Arrested For Drunk Driving After Crashing Into Indiana Patrol Car

An Illinois man was arrested for drunk driving late Thursday night after Indiana State Police said he crashed his SUV directly into a parked patrol car on the Borman Expressway in Hammond.

Late-Night Collision on Interstate 80/94

The crash unfolded at approximately 11:15 p.m. as an Indiana State Police trooper sat parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes near Indianapolis Boulevard, actively conducting traffic enforcement. Investigators stated that Idom drove his black Infiniti SUV straight into the rear of the occupied squad car.

Minor Injuries Reported at the Scene

Both the state trooper and an Indiana State Police intern who was riding inside the vehicle at the time sustained minor injuries. Emergency medical treatment was provided to both occupants at the scene.

Refusal of Sobriety Tests and Mandatory Blood Draw

When additional troopers arrived to investigate the wreckage, they observed clear signs of impairment. Authorities noted that Idom exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes and carried a distinct odor of alcohol. He subsequently refused to submit to field sobriety tests, a portable breath test, or any chemical testing.

Multiple Charges and Jail Booking

Christopher Idom, 34, of Blue Island, now faces two counts of operating while intoxicated and one count of operating a vehicle with a suspended registration, according to Indiana State Police. Troopers also cited him for unsafe lane movement and operating without financial responsibility following the late-night collision on Interstate 80/94.

Faced with the refusal, investigating officers secured a search warrant to obtain a mandatory blood draw. Following the procedure, Idom was transported and booked into the Lake County Jail. Court information detailing his initial appearance was not immediately available, according to CBS Chicago.
