Israel to close West Bank crossings on Oct 27, 2026

Israel announced it will close all land crossings with the West Bank on October 27, 2026, coinciding with the nation’s upcoming election. The measure follows a weekend escalation involving deadly militant attacks, widespread military operations in Hebron, and the displacement of approximately 2,000 residents.

The decision to shut the borders comes on the heels of a security crisis triggered by Palestinian gunmen who killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others at a checkpoint near a Palestinian city. While Hamas did not claim responsibility for the attack, the group publicly praised the killings as the military ramped up operations across the occupied territory.

Border Closures and Worker Entry Bans for Election Day

The Israel Defense Forces announced that all land crossings will remain shut throughout Tuesday, October 27, on Election Day. In addition to the frontier shutdowns, authorities instituted sweeping travel restrictions preventing Palestinian laborers from crossing into Israeli communities or industrial zones.

The military stated that Palestinian workers would not be permitted to enter Israeli communities in Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley for employment. These travel prohibitions extend across all industrial zones within those sectors, alongside a broader enforcement barring the entry and exit of workers throughout Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley.

Military Raids and Displacement in Hebron

The border restrictions accompany an intensive military sweep in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, where troops pushed into neighborhoods and displaced about 2,000 residents. The Israeli military stated that it had operated in 40 areas across the West Bank on Friday and Saturday, arresting about 40 suspects including individuals described as members of Hamas and Islamic terrorists. According to local reporting, soldiers used loudspeakers late at night to order families to evacuate their homes.

He noted that elderly relatives, including his 90-year-old bedridden mother-in-law, had to be carried out of the area.

Israel Katz, Defence Minister

Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the extent of the displacement, while right-wing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that he personally ordered the immediate demolition of a row of illegal structures in the wake of the checkpoint shooting. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also stated that he was planning an operation on a scale not seen since Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967.

Political Stakes and Opposition Protests in Tel Aviv

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a tight electoral contest in Tuesday’s vote, with his security-focused reputation severely pressured since the October 7, 2023 attacks. Campaigning under intense political scrutiny, Netanyahu threatened a very big surprise for the Palestinian Authority in an interview with i24 television.

Local leaders and opposition figures argue that the timing of the military crackdown is politically motivated. Tamimi claimed that the operation was occurring simply because Netanyahu wanted to win the election on the blood of the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, anti-government sentiment boiled over in urban centers. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv for a massive protest organized by the October Council—a group representing families of victims and hostages taken during the October 7 assault—demanding accountability from the government just three days ahead of the election alongside opposition leaders like former military chief Gadi Eisenkot.
