Jackie the Celebrity Bald Eagle Dies at 14 After Illness

She succumbed to a severe, prolonged illness following weeks of intensive veterinary care at the Ojai Raptor Center after being rescued in July.

The raptor became an unexpected internet icon after her daily life was broadcast via a camera installed high in a Jeffrey pine tree overlooking Big Bear Lake. Millions of viewers worldwide tuned in year-round, watching her and her longtime mate, Shadow, endure winter snowstorms, raise numerous eaglets, and defend their territory. Her death marks the end of an extraordinary era for wildlife observation and conservation awareness in California.

Medical Struggle and Final Days at Ojai Raptor Center

Jackie’s health decline began in mid-July after she was discovered grounded near Dana Point Park following an apparent fight with two subadult eagles. Transported roughly 170 miles away to the Ojai Raptor Center, she underwent intensive medical evaluation. Veterinarians diagnosed severe anemia and kidney inflammation, prompting round-the-clock supportive care, oxygen therapy, and a life-saving blood transfusion from another eagle.

Despite these interventions, her red blood cell levels continued to fluctuate dangerously. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, closely evaluated her treatment.

While extensive testing successfully ruled out lead poisoning—a frequent killer of bald eagles—her underlying ailment ultimately proved insurmountable.

Believed to be the first bald eagle hatched in Big Bear Valley in recent history, Jackie emerged in 2012 just as American bald eagle populations were recovering from the devastation caused by the pesticide DDT and habitat loss.

The conservation trajectory of the local population shifted permanently when Sandy Steers, executive director of the Friends of Big Bear Valley, and a U.S. Forest Service employee raised $10,000 over two years to install a solar-powered camera 120 feet above the forest floor.

Her partnership with Shadow, formed in 2018, cemented her celebrity status.

News of Jackie’s death prompted an immediate wave of sorrow across social media platforms, where the Friends of Big Bear Valley livestream maintained hundreds of thousands of subscribers and more than a million followers.

Wildlife organizations also honored her impact. The CALM Zoo, which housed the eagle that previously provided Jackie’s blood transfusion, praised the unwavering dedication of her medical team.

Meanwhile, changes at the Big Bear nest have already begun to unfold. In the weeks following Jackie’s initial disappearance and hospitalization, Shadow was spotted in the territory with a new female partner identified as KD1, a bald eagle hatched in 2022 in the Prado Basin more than 100 miles away, while her most recent eaglets have remained out of sight for weeks.
