Jay Silveria to continue Arkansas athletics review before Purdue role

University of Arkansas System president Jay Silveria is expected to continue his review of the Razorbacks’ athletics department as he prepares to transition to a new role at Purdue University. Silveria was hired as president at Purdue on Thursday.

“The president is not expected to begin his new role at Purdue University until Feb. 1. Until that time, the Board expects President Silveria to continue his role in Arkansas,” Nate Hinkel, UA System director of communications, wrote in an email. “This includes his work fulfilling the board’s resolution regarding the review of Razorbacks athletics passed in September.” On Sept. 18, Silveria was directed by the UA Board of Trustees to lead a review into the “state of competitiveness of Razorback Athletics, including steps to improve the resources available to the football program.”

Review Progress and Timeline

No concrete details of the review have been communicated publicly. Hinkel provided an update on Oct. 21, stating that Silveria “has had several weeks of productive conversations both internally and externally”. He added that “the necessary resources to increase investment in the football program in the short-term have been identified, and the president is working with campus leadership on a plan for long-term success.”

Randy Lawson, chairman of the UA Board of Trustees, said during an Oct. 2 interview that there was no deadline for Silveria’s review to be completed, but noted the January transfer portal for football was a consideration. “Obviously, you’ve got the portal coming up in a few months,” Lawson said. “You’ve got decisions that have to be made, so sooner rather than later, I will say that.”

Coach’s Confidence and Upcoming Games

Arkansas football coach Ryan Silverfield said during a Little Rock radio interview on Oct. 21 that the review was “going quite well.” He also expressed confidence, stating, “we are going to have the necessary resources to be successful in the future, in the 2027 season and beyond.” The Razorbacks have a 3-5 overall, 1-4 SEC record heading into a November schedule that includes games against Auburn, No. 21 South Carolina, No. 7 Texas and No. 14 LSU.

Transition and Purdue Context

During his news conference in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Thursday, Silveria said he wanted to meet with faculty, staff, coaches, students, state leaders, legislators, donors, ticket holders and other groups to discuss athletics. “Certainly athletics are an important part of what Purdue does,” Silveria said. “And the university, we will do that as a team and as a family, we will figure out the best way through that.” Gary Lehman, the chairman of the Purdue Board of Trustees, said he spoke with Silveria about Arkansas “and how they’re trying to address some of those things” related to funding athletics in the era of revenue sharing with athletes. “There’s no rules,” Lehman said. “How do you develop a strategy and how do you”
