Hours after TMZ published a report about Thornton’s suspension on Sept. 1, the veteran broadcaster’s legal representation denounced the article for suggesting there was criminal wrongdoing during a commercial flight to Los Angeles in May. The voice actor’s lawyer maintains that he did not engage in any illegal conduct, was never arrested, and faced no criminal charges following the incident.

The May 14 Flight Incident Aboard American Airlines

The controversy stems from American Airlines Flight 1276 on May 14. An American Airlines spokesperson stated that American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) following concerns reported by a customer onboard. According to reports, a passenger on board grew concerned about material displayed on Thornton’s laptop screen during the journey and notified flight attendants. Outlets including TMZ reported that the passenger photographed material visible on Thornton’s screen and shared those images with airline personnel. The reports alleged the material appeared connected to an online forum focused on individuals struggling with sexual attractions to minors, prompting the complaint and the request for law enforcement intervention when the plane landed.

Upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport, law enforcement met the aircraft following the customer’s report. However, Thornton’s defense team asserts that authorities quickly established that no crime had taken place.

Thornton’s Legal Defense and Explanation

Thornton’s attorney denounces the initial reports for implying criminal activity. The defense explains that the airport encounter stemmed from a misunderstanding tied to Thornton’s involvement in suicide-prevention advocacy.

According to his legal counsel, Thornton reportedly became active in that work after losing a close family member to suicide. His lawyer said he had previously visited resources associated with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and was mistakenly directed to a separate website with a similar web address. His lawyer states that Thornton left the page after realizing its actual subject matter and did not download, distribute, or seek illegal content.

Sony Pictures Television’s Response and Recasting

Although law enforcement cleared the broadcaster at the airport, the situation evolved after media inquiries reached the production company. Thornton’s lawyer said it was TMZ’s request for comment regarding the article that led to the internal investigation and Thornton’s suspension. USA TODAY reached out to Wheel of Fortune production company Sony Pictures Television and the Los Angeles Police Department for comment.

Sony Pictures Television moved swiftly to address the vacancy while the review unfolds. In a statement provided to USA TODAY, a studio spokesperson confirmed the suspension while declining to address details of the investigation.

Thornton has been with the syndicated game show since 2010, when he was one of the guest announcers who tried out for the role. In 2011, he was officially cast as the replacement for Charlie O’Donnell, who had been at the mic for more than 25 years and died in November 2010. In 2021, Thornton also became the announcer for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. As Wheel of Fortune, which stars cohosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White, currently airs reruns ahead of the premiere of Season 44 on Monday, Sept. 14, Sony has not commented publicly on Thornton’s explanation, and the company has not announced when its investigation may conclude.
