Jon Gosselin admits he wouldn’t recognize estranged twin daughters Madelyn, Cara on podcast

Jon Gosselin, the former TLC star, has made a devastating admission about the collapse of his relationship with his eldest children: he would not be able to pick his 26-year-old twin daughters, Madelyn and Cara, out on the street. The “Jon & Kate Plus 8” alum called the duo “strangers” during Tuesday’s episode of the “Legally Goff Podcast,” revealing that he has not seen them since they were 13 years old.

The admission lays bare a 13-year silence that Gosselin says has “eaten my soul away.” “I don’t care if they call me an asshole or whatever,” the 49-year-old former IT technician and DJ said. “I just want some kind of response. Just text me or message me. At least I’ll know. Walking around for 13 years not knowing has pretty much eaten my soul away.” He described the distance as “upsetting” and “gut-wrenching,” noting that he has nightmares about what his daughters believe about him.

Thirteen Years of Silence

Gosselin claims he was “alienated” from his daughters’ lives by his ex-wife, Kate Gosselin, following their 2009 divorce, when the former nurse was granted primary physical custody of all eight children. “Alienation [as in] silence. I’ve never heard their voice,” he explained on the podcast. “One day, I was an active every day parent … and I was just cut out of their lives.”

The DJ detailed the milestones he missed during the silence: “I missed graduations. I missed proms. I don’t know anything about my twins — if they have boyfriends or girlfriends, or what favorite color they have now, if they drive a car. I know nothing.” The stark reality of the estrangement crystallized in his admission that even with photographs, “I still wouldn’t be able to pick them out on the street. That’s how much I haven’t seen them.”

He speculated that his adult children “believe the narrative of TLC, that [he’s] a s–tbag and that [he] doesn’t want to see them.” Alleging that Kate previously told him and Collin that they each “didn’t want to see” each other, Jon said, “I believe that’s exactly what she said to Madelyn and Cara. That’s their mother, they believed her and that was it. And the same thing with the other four.” He added that he does not “blame them,” claiming his kids “live in fear.”

The Custody Fight Turns Public

The family’s fractures extend beyond the twins. Gosselin is also estranged from four of his 22-year-old sextuplets — Leah, Alexis, Aaden and Joel — though he maintains relationships with Collin and Hannah. By 2018, Jon had obtained custody of Hannah and Collin, the latter of whom had spent nearly two years in a behavioral health institution prior to the arrangement. The family once appeared together on “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” with scenes from 2007 showing Jon and Kate, and a 2009 photograph capturing the sextuplets’ fifth birthday celebration with both parents.

The Daughters’ Public Defense

While Jon Gosselin maintains he wants contact, the twins have occasionally spoken publicly about their family. In 2023, Madelyn made headlines for defending her siblings on TikTok, insisting they are not “damaged” or “crazy child stars.” “They are all smart, they are all kind, they’re driven students, they’re working hard, they’re funny, they’re stylish,” she told her followers.

Madelyn and Cara appeared with their mother on June 11, 2019, when the trio visited “Extra” at Times Square in New York. Since then, the sisters have remained primarily out of the public eye, aside from rare social media glimpses from Kate.

An Unresolved Rift

Gosselin’s plea remains open-ended. Last month, he told “Entertainment Tonight,” “I hope you understand that I still love you. I hope one day you reach out to me. And please read your brother’s book because I think that will explain a lot. Be your own person. You are all adults now.”
