Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Olson set a new career saves record for Gustavus on Wednesday, securing a 0-0 draw against UW-Stout in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Olson reached 398 career saves, surpassing the previous record of 397 held by Ashley Becker since 2019.
In four years of collegiate play, Olson has missed only 414 minutes and 52 seconds of game time. She has started every single match over the last three seasons, serving as the last line of defense for the Gusties.
A record forged in the rain
The match itself was a grueling affair, defined as much by the elements as by the athletes. The first half progressed for 43 minutes and 21 seconds before lightning forced a total stoppage for over an hour.
The first half was a defensive stalemate. While the teams combined for 20 shots, only seven actually found the target. UW-Stout held a slight advantage in shots on goal, 5-2, while Gustavus controlled the corners 4-3. Early offensive efforts from juniors Lauren Coy and Meghan Colebeck, along with Kate Hamski, kept the Blue Devils honest, but the game remained locked.
Traveling up the North Shore on Tuesday, the @GustieWSoccer team tied St. Scholastica, 1-1. Tessa Zachmann led the team with four shots on goal and scored once while goalkeeper Katelyn Olson made 10 saves in net. Recap: https://t.co/14DRCBGwVU#GoGusties | #d3soc
The second half shifted the pressure squarely onto Olson’s shoulders. After the weather delay, the Gusties managed two early shots on goal via first-year Taylor Schilling and sophomore Jordyn Shear. Following that burst, the offense went cold, managing only two more shots—one of which was blocked. The Blue Devils seized the offensive momentum, but Olson responded with four critical saves to maintain the shutout.
The history-making moment arrived in the 86th minute. A powerful shot from outside the penalty area screamed toward the lower left corner of the net. Olson reacted instinctively, diving to her left to stop the ball and hold onto it, officially claiming the career saves title in the process.
The legacy of the 2026 senior class
Olson’s achievement serves as the capstone for a senior class that has seen a wide spectrum of results at the Gustie Soccer Field. This group’s tenure began on September 1, 2023, with a 2-1 victory over UW-Superior. Since then, they have compiled a home record of 15-11-8, a journey that concluded with this hard-fought tie.
The stability Olson provided in goal is a reflection of the competitive athletic culture at Gustavus. According to the Gustavus Adolphus College athletics department, the institution emphasizes a balance between national competitiveness in 23 varsity sports and rigorous academic excellence. For athletes like Olson, the “glory on the field” is paired with the demands of a liberal arts education, including original research and community projects.
The Blue Devils were unable to crack a defense that refused to blink, even after a grueling weather delay and a relentless second-half assault.
Comparing the Record Holders
The margin of victory over the previous record was a single save. This highlights the consistency Olson maintained over four years to chip away at a mark that had stood for seven seasons.

The Gusties now turn their attention to the final match of the 2026 season. They face No. 20 Carleton this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Northfield. With the record books already updated, the focus shifts from individual milestones to how this veteran defense handles one of the top-ranked opponents in the country.
Whether the season ends with a win or another shutout, Olson has already ensured her name is permanently etched into the program’s history. The only question remaining is how she chooses to close the book on her collegiate career.
