Lautaro Spatz: Owono ‘would never intentionally hurt anyone’ after De Miguel’s death

Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono is reeling from the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, teammate Lautaro Spatz said Wednesday, insisting the keeper would never intentionally hurt anyone after the on-pitch collision that ended De Miguel’s life during Monday’s Spanish second-division match at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez.

Owono had run toward the centre circle to clear a long ball when the collision occurred. The striker lay motionless on the pitch as medical staff treated him before he was taken by ambulance from the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez to hospital. Owono was sent off and the match was abandoned.

I also want to say a few words about my team-mate, goalkeeper and friend, who is deeply affected by what has happened. Those of us who know him know the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering at this moment and that he would never intentionally hurt anyone.

Writing on social media Wednesday, Spatz paid tribute to De Miguel and defended his team-mate, saying that in football unfortunate incidents can happen but no one could imagine that one might end with such tragic consequences.

The Equatoguinean Football Federation said in a statement on Tuesday that the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who has made 47 international appearances for Equatorial Guinea, was going through a situation of profound sorrow and grief.

Six Days of Mourning at Tenerife

Tenerife said in a statement that six official days of mourning would begin, with all club activities suspended. On Tuesday, mourners laid flowers and lit candles beneath a black-and-white image of De Miguel at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The world of football paid tribute with a minute’s silence at all European games this week.
