Macron Calls for Calm After France Riots Over Living Costs, Public Services

French President Emmanuel Macron urged calm and order on Sunday after nationwide protests over living costs and public services erupted into rioting, looting, and widespread clashes. Authorities reported at least 1,800 arrests across France following a weekend of severe unrest that left historic buildings damaged and hundreds of police officers injured.

What began as large-scale, largely peaceful demonstrations quickly deteriorated on Saturday as unauthorized groups surged through major French cities. Demonstrators had answered calls from student organizations, activists, and labor unions seeking to revive the anti-government momentum of the 2018 yellow vest movement. Instead, the marches in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux gave way to widespread vandalism and theft. According to authorities, roughly 550,000 people participated nationwide, while organizers put the tally closer to 800,000.

Limoges City Hall Gutted and Landmarks Damaged in Weekend Violence

The destructive peak of the weekend unfolded away from the capital as well as within it. In the central town of Limoges, rioters breached the 19th-century City Hall while employees, security staff, and members of the public were inside. Maurice Barate, the prefect of the Haute-Vienne region, noted that they deliberately set the building on fire, causing the roof and clock tower to collapse and leaving the historic structure largely destroyed.

Despite the presence of so many people, they deliberately set the building on fire. It is an extremely serious and unspeakable act.

In Paris, rioters targeted tourist and shopping districts, leaving dislodged cobblestones, shattered storefronts, and broken glass scattered around the Place de la République. Protesters also damaged the base of the square’s central Marianne statue. Meanwhile, in Marseille, demonstrators briefly breached the lobby of City Hall and damaged a police station, and a tourist office caught fire in Lyon.

Macron Warns Against Escalation as Arrests Approach 2,400

Speaking from the Élysée Palace following an emergency meeting with senior government officials, President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on Sunday. He distinguished between the grievances of everyday citizens and the actions of violent agitators.

We all feel anger and shame.

Macron emphasized that nothing justifies the unbridled violence witnessed over the weekend and promised that those responsible would face justice. The French interior ministry reported that total arrests reached approximately 2,400 nationwide, approaching the nearly 2,000 detentions recorded during a single day of yellow vest demonstrations in December 2018. Police also confirmed that roughly 1,000 law enforcement officers sustained injuries on Saturday alone, with seven in serious condition, and noted that one person suffered a fatal heart attack during the Paris demonstrations.

Political Division Deepens Ahead of the Presidential Election

Political leaders across the ideological spectrum quickly seized upon the unrest as France prepares for a presidential election in April. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez blamed the escalation on several thousand far-left individuals determined to target public buildings and confront police, followed by criminal elements exploiting the chaos to loot businesses.

That assessment drew immediate condemnation from opposition figures. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the hard-left La France Insoumise party, accused Nuñez and police chiefs of showing complete incompetence in their handling of the demonstrations. On the opposite side of the aisle, Marine Le Pen, leader of the hard-right National Rally party, criticized the centrist government as exhausted and disoriented while condemning the exploitation of anger by political factions encouraging violence.
