Commuters in Boston face trips that could take at least 25 minutes longer than usual this Halloween weekend as the MBTA suspends service on significant portions of the Green Line. According to a report by Boston 25 News, the shutdown is required to complete critical signal upgrades and maintain previous infrastructure improvements as part of a broader modernization effort for the transit system.
Green Line service suspended on B, C, D, and E branches
The service disruptions will take place this Saturday and Sunday. The scope of the shutdown varies by branch, cutting off access to several key hubs in the city.
- B Branch: No trains will operate between North Station and Babcock Street.
- E Branch: No trains will operate between North Station and Heath Street.
- C and D Branches: Service is suspended between North Station and Kenmore.
For those who typically rely on these lines, the “so what” is a significant shift in how to enter the city center.
Free shuttles and alternative transit routes
To mitigate the impact, the MBTA is deploying free shuttle bus service to connect passengers to Copley and Back Bay stations. These hubs allow riders to transfer to the Orange Line to continue their journey. The agency also announced that several bus routes will be free during the shutdown period.
Commuters using the Framingham/Worcester Line have a specific alternative: the MBTA will provide free service between Lansdowne and South Station. This provides a bypass for those traveling from the west who would otherwise be affected by the Green Line’s closure at Kenmore.
An MBTA spokesperson said the shutdown is necessary to maintain previous infrastructure improvements and continue modernization work on the transit system.
The long-term cost of modernization
Scheduling major shutdowns during a holiday weekend places a burden on the commute in areas like Copley and Back Bay. The reliance on shuttle buses introduces variables that can affect the 25-minute estimate provided by the agency.
The disruption isn’t a one-off event. Riders should prepare for a repeat of this experience, as the MBTA has warned that additional Green Line work and similar service disruptions are expected the following weekend.
