Mercury Prize Fringe Opens in Tyneside

The Mercury Prize Fringe opens in Tyneside today, marking the music award’s second year in Newcastle following Geordie musician Sam Fender’s 2025 win. The week-long programme features performances and workshops, with local artists highlighting the region’s phenomenal cultural scene ahead of the October 22 winner announcement.

North-east England feels like the center of the music world as the Mercury Prize Fringe kicks off its week-long series of performances, workshops, and talks across Tyneside. Led by music development agency Generator, the events aim to showcase the region’s emerging talent and give local artists a prominent platform.

Sam Fender’s Legacy and Sunderland Headliner Tom A. Smith

Much of the current buzz stems from local success. Sunderland’s Tom A. Smith, who headlines BBC Introducing Live at the Glasshouse on Monday, credits Sam Fender’s 2025 victory for energizing local musicians. Fender won the prestigious award last year for his album People Watching.

The North East is just so phenomenal, it feels like the cultural hub in the country in terms of music right now.

Smith noted that Fender acts as a figurehead for guitar music right now, inspiring a new wave of bands carrying through the entire region.

Fringe Events, Local Nominees, and the Utilita Arena Ceremony

The fringe programming includes a Mini Mercury event on Sunday designed for musicians aged 12 to 18, allowing younger performers to take over a professional venue. On Tuesday, local shortlisted band Knats will host a listening party and conversation in the West End regarding their nominated album, A Great Day in Newcastle.
