A missing hunter and a stranded kayaker required emergency assistance during a single deployment by the Mesa County Search and Rescue (MCSAR) team, the Denver Gazette reported.
The incidents occurred on Oct. 30, when responders were already mobilizing to locate a hunter in the Uncompahgre Wilderness who was 24 hours overdue. While the team prepared for that mission, a second call arrived regarding a kayaker stranded on an island in the Colorado River near Dike Road in Grand Junction.
The kayaker had experienced a boat flip, resulting in the loss of both paddles and glasses. Without the ability to see clearly or maneuver through the water, the individual remained stuck on an island along with a dog.
Two rescue swimmers paddled across the river to reach the subject. Although the person was cold and had sustained minor bruising to their lower legs, MCSAR determined they were otherwise in good condition.
Rescuers successfully brought the kayaker and the dog aboard a vessel and floated them downstream. The group exited the river at the boat ramp at Connected Lakes, where they were able to warm up.
The dual calls highlight a period of high activity for local emergency responders. According to MCSAR, these incidents were part of a broader surge in service requests for the agency.
The team responded to 10 separate calls between Oct. 21 and Oct. 31, according to data shared by MCSAR.
