Michelle Malone and James Reinkemeyer Drive Community Impact at JC Parks

Building Community Connections at The Linc

For many residents visiting The Linc in Jefferson City, Missouri, the morning routine is defined by more than just exercise; it is defined by the staff members who turn a fitness center into a social hub. According to recent reports from JC Parks, the impact of staff like Michelle Malone has fundamentally shifted the way community members engage with their local recreation facilities.

The transformation is most visible in the “Twalkers” group, a walking collective that has become a lifeline for its members. One participant, who initially struggled to complete a single lap around the indoor track, credits Malone’s persistent encouragement for their current ability to walk two miles per session. The member noted that the group, which started as a collection of strangers, has evolved into a family. “I do not believe the Twalkers would even exist if it wasn’t for Michelle,” the member wrote in a recent email to the department, highlighting that for many, these morning sessions are their only outing of the day.

Recognizing Excellence in Special Populations Programming

While the front desk and fitness areas foster general community bonds, the department’s commitment to inclusivity is anchored by its specialized programming. James Reinkemeyer, the Special Populations Program Manager for JC Parks, has spent the last seven years expanding recreational access for individuals with cognitive and intellectual disabilities. His work involves overseeing approximately 30 employees and managing adaptive recreation programs ranging from community outings to local craft nights.

Reinkemeyer’s efforts earned him significant recognition this year. He was named a 2026 30 Under 30 honoree by the Jefferson City News Tribune magazine and received the 2026 Special Olympics Missouri Central Area Coach of the Year award.

Expanding the Parks Infrastructure

Beyond individual spotlights, JC Parks is currently adjusting its operational team to maintain the city’s green spaces and facilities. This October, Cody Linnell joined the Landscape and Beautification crew, a team tasked with the upkeep of the city’s functional outdoor spaces. On the operational side, Joshua Cochran has rejoined the department as the superintendent of the Oak Hills Golf Center.
