Sequence of the Collision

Preliminary findings from the Overland Park Traffic Unit suggest the crash originated with a Mercedes-Benz traveling westbound on 107th Street. According to reports from both KCTV5 and the Johnson County Post, the Mercedes-Benz allegedly failed to stop for a red light at the intersection with Nall Avenue. This action initiated a series of impacts that involved three other vehicles.

  • The Mercedes-Benz first struck the Honda driven by Randall Stevens, which was turning eastbound onto 107th Street from southbound Nall Avenue.
  • The Mercedes continued through the intersection, striking a Toyota that was turning west onto 107th Street from northbound Nall Avenue.
  • The force of this second impact pushed the Toyota into a Volkswagen, which was stationary at a red light on eastbound 107th Street.

Ofc. John Lacy, a spokesperson for the Overland Police Department, noted that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was transported to a hospital in stable condition. Occupants of the Toyota and the Volkswagen were evaluated at the scene and reported no injuries.

The Investigation Continues

While the initial assessment points to a red-light violation, the Traffic Safety Unit is continuing its work to finalize the details of the incident. Authorities have not yet released information regarding potential charges or the identity of the driver of the Mercedes-Benz. The intersection of Nall Avenue and 107th Street, a busy thoroughfare just north of Interstate 435, remained a focus of police activity throughout Tuesday as investigators documented the scene.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who possesses information that could aid the Traffic Safety Unit to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the department at 913-890-1516.
