Northbound Highway 99 reopens after multi-vehicle crash, CHP says

Northbound Highway 99 in Sacramento County has reopened after a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi truck that claimed one life and left multiple people hospitalized on Thursday. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the fatal crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m.

The crash involved three vehicles, according to CHP. A semi truck drifted onto the shoulder of the freeway and struck a Nissan sedan and a Mazda sedan that were disabled. The driver of the Nissan and a passenger, as well as the driver of the Mazda, were transported to a hospital. The driver of the Nissan later died from their injuries. The semi truck overturned onto its left side, blocking a lane and the center divide, prompting officials to divert traffic onto Dillard Road.

Highway 99 Lanes Reopen

The northbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for over three hours while crews worked to clear the scene. The road was fully reopened by 5 p.m., according to CHP traffic logs. A SigAlert had been issued, indicating extended delays were expected.

Cause Under Investigation

CHP has not released details on what caused the crash or if drug or alcohol use is a factor. Caltrans cameras showed traffic congestion from Elk Grove to north of Mingo Road during the closure.

Multiple Injuries Reported

Multiple people sustained major injuries in the crash, though the specific number of injured individuals has not been disclosed. The Mazda was disabled on the shoulder waiting for roadside assistance when the Nissan driver pulled over behind to help, prior to the semi truck’s impact.
