Oregon Man Adam Hunter Harmel Charged in Federal Minor Exploitation Case

Utah Minor Recovered After 18 Months; Oregon Man Charged in Federal Complaint

A Utah minor who disappeared in May 2025 was recovered by law enforcement on Nov. 1 at a residence in Oregon, and a 39-year-old Oregon man is now in federal custody, charged with transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, the Justice Department reported.

The recovery closes a case that stretched across state lines and, according to court documents, began with online contact on gaming platforms. Adam Hunter Harmel, 39, of Huntington, Oregon, was charged in a federal complaint on Nov. 2 in the District of Utah and made his initial appearance on Nov. 4 at the U.S. District Courthouse in Boise, Idaho.

The complaint alleges that beginning in or about May 2025 and continuing until Nov. 1, Harmel transported the minor with the intent to engage in sexual activity with her. According to the Justice Department, Harmel allegedly met the victim online in May 2025, drove to Utah to pick her up, and then transported her to his residence across state lines.

How the Investigation Unfolded

On or about Aug. 20, 2025, the FBI’s Salt Lake City office received information that the minor had disappeared in May 2025. During the investigation, agents learned the victim was allegedly groomed on gaming platforms commonly used by members of Nihilistic Violent Extremist groups to solicit sexually explicit and self-harm imagery. The contact then moved to other social media applications.

On Nov. 1, the FBI received a tip about the victim’s possible location and that she had met Harmel on a social media application in May 2025. Law enforcement recovered the minor at the Oregon residence that day. Court documents allege Harmel kept a knife under his pillow to prevent the victim from escaping.

The case is being investigated by the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office together with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, with assistance from the Oregon State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jawayria Z. Auchter of the District of Utah and trial attorneys Justin Sher and James Donnelly of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting.

“Anyone engaged in the sexual exploitation of a minor will be held accountable,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Today’s arrest is the first step toward bringing the accused to justice and relieving the pain endured by the victim and her family.”

“Our priority in this case was the safe return of the minor victim,” said U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak for the District of Utah. “Those who allegedly exploit and prey upon the most vulnerable members of our communities will be relentlessly investigated and held accountable.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said the minor was missing for a year and a half until Oregon police recovered her based on information provided by the FBI, and he credited the FBI Salt Lake Field Office, the Oregon State Police, and federal prosecutors for their work on the case.

A complaint is merely an allegation, and Harmel is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
