Pet budgie Luna found in drain a mile from home After Storm escape

Luna the Budgie’s Dramatic Escape and Rescue

In a bizarre incident, a pet budgie named Luna escaped from her home in Northampton during Storm Boelo and was found hiding in a drain a mile away. According to wyomingnewsnow.tv, the 11-month-old bird’s adventure began when strong winds blew open a kitchen window, allowing her to fly away.

Luna’s owner, Cimberley Frost, reported that she had been watching her eat in the living room when suddenly she realized it had gone quiet. Upon investigation, Frost noticed the open window and realized Luna had escaped. The family played budgie noises to try and help Luna find her way home, but to no avail. Frost then posted on social media, and someone got in touch to say they’d heard the RSPCA had picked up a budgie nearby.

RSPCA Inspector Richard Durant, who was out with trainee animal rescue officer Rosie Cowie on October 26, received the call and rushed to the scene.

It appears that Luna didn’t venture far before being startled by something, leading her to seek refuge in a drain, according to Durant. “Luckily, in a bizarre turn of events, a passing driver happened to spot her jump down into the drain and called us for help.”

Rosie Cowie, who performed the rescue, described the experience:

We peered down the drain and there was Luna’s little beak peeking out from a pipe. I carefully picked her up and placed her in a pet carrier; it was my first rescue, and it’s definitely one that will stay with me.”

Luna was taken into RSPCA care, and days later, her worried owner got in touch. Animal Rescue Officer Ellie Grindod brought Luna back to a relieved Cimberley, whose home was just a mile from where the budgie had been found. Cimberley expressed her relief, stating, “The house was so quiet without her; she’s always squeaking and talking. We really missed her; now she’s back to being Lady of the house.”
