Princess Tengku Puteri Ilyana Alia of Malaysia married British racing driver Christopher Lionel Froggatt in Kuala Lumpur on August 7. Held at the Shangri-La Hotel, the multi-day celebration blended Islamic and Malay royal traditions with the groom’s international motorsport background.

A Royal Ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel

The wedding festivities in Kuala Lumpur brought together two distinct worlds, uniting a member of Malaysia’s prominent royal family with an international GT racing competitor. The marriage ceremonies began with the traditional Akad Nikah, followed by the Majlis Persandingan Diraja celebration at the Shangri-La Hotel.

The bride, 29-year-old Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Ilyana, is the daughter of Sultan Abdullah, the Sultan of Pahang who also served as Malaysia’s 16th King from 2019 to 2024. Her mother is Julia Rais, a former actress.

Sultan Abdullah attended the solemnisation alongside other members of the Pahang royal family, including the Regent and Crown Prince of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah. Dignitaries outside the immediate royal household also joined the guests, including Pahang Chief Minister Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates.

Islamic Customs and Malay Royal Traditions

The proceedings followed established Islamic customs and Malay royal traditions. According to the Kesultanan Pahang’s official account, Froggatt performed the sunnah prayer before the couple processed to the dais.

The ceremony included the presentation of the mas kahwin—the traditional marriage gift—followed by the exchange of wedding rings and the recitation of prayers. Afterward, the newlyweds participated in the merenjis, a symbolic sprinkling ceremony performed to bless the newly married couple with well-being.

For the wedding, Princess Ilyana wore a gown designed by Malaysian fashion designer Indiatimes. She paired the contemporary bridal look with a prominent royal heirloom: Queen Azizah’s Diamond Tiara.

The dramatic tiara was originally acquired from the Belgian jeweller Wolfers in Brussels and has previously been worn by other members of the Pahang royal family during their own weddings. Photographs from the event showed the bride and groom seated together in traditional attire as the multi-day celebrations unfolded.

From Motocross to the GT Racing Grid

While his bride occupies a central place in Malaysia’s hereditary royal lineage, 32-year-old Christopher Lionel Froggatt has established a career in international motorsport. He competes in GT racing, most notably in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup behind the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3.

According to his racing biography, a turning point arrived when a close friend invited him to an exploratory high-performance driving event at the Ferrari test track in Fiorano, Italy. That single track day catalyzed his transition into professional competition.

Since entering the sport, Froggatt has collected several titles in endurance and sprint competition. His career achievements include winning the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Bronze Cup in 2021 and 2023, alongside taking the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Pro-Am title in 2020.
