Fillmore. According to Topeka Police, Schwegman stabbed two individuals at that location and faces an allegation of rape tied to the same address. He then moved further up the road, forcing entry into two separate homes. Four children, including a four-month-old baby, were inside one of the targeted residences, though officials confirmed they were unharmed during the break-ins.

The attacks continued on a nearby street where a third victim sustained stab wounds. Schwegman then made his way to Ward Meade Park, where a 70-year-old woman was injured during an assault.

Ron Hubbard happened to be nearby when the suspect fled the park.

“I happened to look up the street to my left, and I seen this strange guy,” Hubbard said.

Realizing the situation matched emergency scenarios he had seen on television, Hubbard and a friend confronted the suspect. When Schwegman tried to run past, Hubbard stepped out and tripped him into the grass, dislodging a knife that fell nearby.

“I decided to step in, throw my leg out, trip him and he landed over here in the grass, and the knife fell in the grass,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard kicked the weapon away while a second bystander attempted to hold the suspect. Though Schwegman briefly broke free, law enforcement officers apprehended him shortly afterward.

Court Appearance and Bond

Schwegman made his initial appearance in court on Thursday, Oct. 29, facing a total of 16 charges stemming from the incidents. The presiding judge set his bond at $3 million.

“Well, if you see something bad, try to help stop it. I wish we could have got to it before this happened,” Hubbard said.
