The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation confirmed that the 48-year-old suspect surrendered to authorities at the Durban North Police Station. Following his surrender, he is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court to face serious criminal counts. According to the investigation, the man is formally accused of trafficking in persons, sexual assault, and kidnapping.
This development follows the arrest of the primary suspect in the investigation. The initial arrest occurred after a controversial businessman appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s court the day before the second suspect’s surrender.
Origins of the Case: The 2022 Rescue in Durban North
The criminal charges stem from an operation carried out in 2022, when law enforcement rescued four young women. The victims had traveled from Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, after responding to a fraudulent employment offer.
Once the victims arrived at the Durban North property, they were subjected to forced sexual exploitation. The rescue operation laid the groundwork for the current multi-suspect prosecution now moving through the KwaZulu-Natal court system.
Status of the Main Suspect and Legal Next Steps
The primary suspect in the trafficking ring is a 65-year-old Durban businessman. Because he has not yet entered a plea on a sexual assault charge, a court order currently restricts the public release of his name. He was taken into custody on a J50 warrant of arrest and ultimately faces a total of 20 charges.
Following a brief initial court appearance, the businessman was remanded and transferred to the Westville Prison Hospital. Judicial authorities confirmed that he is scheduled to apply for bail.
