Shine On Minneapolis Launches Free Black Friday Downtown Block Party

Minneapolis Unveils ‘Shine On’ Winter Campaign with Black Friday Block Party

Minneapolis city leaders, in partnership with the Minneapolis Foundation, have announced a new season-long initiative called Shine On Minneapolis, designed to invigorate downtown during the colder months. FOX 9 reported that the campaign will officially kick off with a free Black Friday block party on Nicollet Mall, aiming to draw visitors to the city’s core with a blend of holiday cheer and community activities.

The effort comes as a direct response to a long-standing tradition of downtown holiday celebrations and a desire to build upon recent successes. It happened during the Holidazzle.

A Night of Free Festivities

The centerpiece of the launch is a major street party scheduled for Friday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. The event will close six blocks of Nicollet Mall, stretching from the IDS Center to Peavey Plaza, to create a massive, pedestrian-friendly zone for all ages. The evening is designed to be a complete experience for families and night owls alike.

Activities will begin early in the afternoon inside the IDS Center’s Crystal Court, where families can enjoy crafts, visits from mascots, and live music starting at 5 p.m. The festive atmosphere will build toward a highly anticipated public moment: the holiday tree lighting. This ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Peavey Plaza, where a DJ-led dance party will keep the energy going until the event concludes at 10 p.m.

Organizers have leaned into a playful winter theme for the kickoff. A marshmallow roasting competition and a ceremonial “first snowball toss” are planned, followed by a designated area where attendees can safely toss snowballs. The announcement event itself ended on a whimsical note, with Mayor Jacob Frey accepting a ceremonial “first snowball” under glass while wearing white gloves, as captured by FOX 9.

A Broader Vision for the Winter Season

While the Black Friday block party serves as the official launch, the Shine On Minneapolis campaign is designed to be a comprehensive, citywide effort. The initiative aims to combine new, signature events with the existing holiday markets, performances, and festivals scheduled throughout the city.

The ultimate goal is clear: to drive foot traffic to downtown’s shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, which often see a slowdown during the winter months. This strategy is not just about creating a single night of fun but about fostering a sustained economic and cultural vibrancy in the urban core from Thanksgiving through December.

To achieve this, the campaign will feature a “Sounds of the Season” series, which will book local musicians to perform in downtown bars, restaurants, and other venues. Nicollet Mall itself will be transformed into an outdoor gallery with interactive musical art installations, adding a layer of cultural discovery to the traditional holiday offerings.

For residents and visitors looking to plan their winter outings, the campaign will centralize information. Organizers state that more than 530 holiday and winter events will be listed at the official hub, ShineOnMinneapolis.com, creating a one-stop resource for seasonal activities.

The plan also acknowledges a deep-seated cultural memory of Minneapolis’s holiday past. By referencing the Holidazzle parade and the tradition of window shopping on Nicollet Mall, the campaign taps into a sense of nostalgia that can be a powerful tool for community engagement.

As the city prepares for the November chill, the Shine On Minneapolis campaign stands as a new effort to bring more people downtown during the winter.
