Southern District Prosecutors File 107 Border Cases Amid Drug and Smuggling Busts

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California filed 107 border-related cases this week, highlighting multiple drug seizures and migrant smuggling attempts along a 140-mile stretch of the U.S.–Mexico border, according to Sandiegored.

Federal law enforcement agencies operating along the Southern District of California’s 140-mile border territory registered a surge of activity this week, according to Sandiegored. The district encompasses the San Ysidro port of entry, recognized as the busiest land crossing in the world linking San Diego to Tijuana.

Coast Guard Intercepts Smuggling Vessel Near Mission Bay

Among the cases filed by federal prosecutors, maritime operations led to the apprehension of multiple individuals on August 1. Mexican nationals Óscar Salado and Brayan Manuel Castro Sánchez were taken into custody and charged with attempting to smuggle undocumented foreigners into the United States for profit, according to court documents cited by Sandiegored.

The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted the smuggling vessel near the entrance to Quivira Basin in Mission Bay. Authorities found nine undocumented individuals on board. Alongside the two defendants, three other individuals—Luz Mayda Andrés Ignacio, Jorge García Santiago, and Everado González-González—face charges for attempted re-entry following prior deportation.

San Ysidro Drug Seizures Concealed in Volkswagen Vehicles

In addition to maritime operations, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the San Ysidro port of entry intercepted large quantities of controlled substances hidden inside vehicles driven by U.S. citizens.

On August 4, José Alexis Rojas Palomera was arrested after officers discovered 70.33 pounds of fentanyl, 29.85 pounds of cocaine, and 24.52 pounds of methamphetamine inside a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta. According to Sandiegored, the narcotics were concealed within the spare tire, rear side panels, fuel tank, rear seat, firewall, and center console.

A separate vehicle crossing on August 5 involved Gustavo Espinoza Hernández, who drove a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas into the port of entry. CBP officers uncovered 74.91 pounds of methamphetamine and 23.63 pounds of fentanyl stashed across the driver’s side floor, front passenger floor, front passenger seat, seat backrest, and rear passenger seat area.

Federal Referrals and Multi-Agency Law Enforcement Response

All 107 cases filed during the week have been referred to federal authorities for prosecution. State and local law enforcement partners provided operational assistance throughout the various maritime and land port incidents, Sandiegored reported.
