Spanish National Police Adopt Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC – NRA.org

The Spanish National Police has officially selected the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC 9mm pistol as the standard issue sidearm for its uniformed officers.

As the national civilian police force of Spain, the Policía Nacional handles high-stakes responsibilities that include urban and metropolitan policing, critical counter-terrorism operations, and nationwide immigration enforcement. For an agency operating in such high-demand environments, the choice of a primary duty sidearm demands rigorous evaluation. The Echelon 4.0FC variant bridges full-size duty capacity—offering 17+1 or 20+1 rounds—with a compact 4-inch-barreled slide assembly designed for rapid handling in close quarters.

Rigorous Testing Protocols in Spain

The selection process was far from a simple administrative rubber stamp. Pitted against offerings from numerous international firearm manufacturers and represented during the evaluation by Lejarazu Sport SLU, the Echelon 4.0FC faced a punishing battery of testing protocols. The trials included intensive shooting and accuracy assessments, barrel obstruction verifications, and drop testing.

Durability trials pushed the sidearms to extremes across a temperature range spanning from -4 degrees Fahrenheit to +122 degrees Fahrenheit. Officials also verified parts interchangeability across the platform. Meeting or exceeding every requirement set by the evaluation team, the handgun secured its place as the force’s new primary sidearm.

“Springfield Armory and HS Produkt are extremely honored that the Echelon 4.0FC has been selected by the Spanish National Police to be the issued pistol for its uniformed officers,” said Dennis Reese, owner and CEO of Springfield Armory. He noted that the platform was engineered from the ground up to deliver a dependable duty-grade 9 mm pistol ready for diverse operational applications.

Modular Architecture and Optics Integration

Beyond baseline performance under harsh environmental conditions, the platform’s modularity proved to be a decisive factor during the evaluations. At the center of the design is a patent-pending Central Operating Group. This self-contained, serialized stainless steel chassis allows departments to move the core operating system between different grip modules in a matter of seconds, accommodating compact variants and other configurations as agency needs evolve.

“HS Produkt, in conjunction with Springfield Armory, spent years and countless hours meticulously developing and testing the Echelon platform pistol to be the ultimate duty pistol platform in existence,” said Zeljko Pavlin, CEO of HS Produkt. “Having the Spanish National Police select the Echelon pistol over the competition through the rounds of vigorous testing validates all that has been invested in the design and establishes the Echelon as the premier choice in duty pistols for government and law enforcement use.”

The handgun also incorporates a Variable Interface System, enabling direct mounting of an expansive range of modern red-dot optics without the need for traditional adapter plates. Originally introduced to the market in 2023, the Echelon family has already seen adoption by various law enforcement agencies and departments across the United States. Now, its footprint extends directly into the tactical infrastructure of one of Europe’s primary national civilian security forces.
