Stonehill Women’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Babson in Home Opener
The Stonehill women’s swimming and diving team secured a decisive victory in their first home meet of the season, defeating Babson College with a final score of 146-101. The matchup, held at the Massasoit Community College Pool on Saturday afternoon, marks a significant momentum builder for the Skyhawks despite a challenging early-season record. According to a report from stonehillskyhawks.com, the win moves Stonehill to 1-4 on the season, while Babson falls to 6-2.
Individual performances across multiple disciplines defined the afternoon in Brockton, Mass. The Skyhawks utilized a diverse spread of winners in both the pool and on the diving boards to outpace the Beavers. This victory provides a necessary cushion for the program as they navigate a competitive schedule, proving they can maintain composure against established opponents like Babson.
Key Victories in the Pool
Grace Idowu emerged as a central figure in the Skyhawks’ success, claiming first place in both the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.5 and the 50 backstroke at 27.34. Her influence extended to the relays as well; she earned a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay alongside teammates Emma Kawai, Isabella Morillo, and Emma Richards, finishing with a time of 4:09.38. Idowu also took second in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 25.62.
The freestyle events saw several Stonehill athletes reach the top of the podium. Abby Toepfer secured a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.63. Her performance was consistent throughout the meet, as she also placed second in both the 100 freestyle (55.62) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.25). Toepfer joined Emma Solheim, Chihiro Bringman, and Andraya Giagios to secure a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, which ended at 3:47.5.
Other standout individual achievements included:
- Isabella Rodriguez: Won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:21.75.
- Emma Richards: Claimed victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.84.
- Aubrey Cramer: Took first place in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall at 5:31.47.
Clifford Sets New Record in Diving
The dominance of the Skyhawks was not limited to the swimming lanes. In the diving portion of the meet, Molly Clifford delivered a standout performance that reset the bar for the program. Clifford broke her own record during the one-meter event, posting a high score of 232.87. This record-breaking feat provided a critical points cushion that helped solidify the gap between Stonehill and Babson.
The team’s ability to score heavily in both swimming and diving disciplines suggests a depth of talent that the Skyhawks will look to leverage as they move deeper into the November schedule. While the 1-4 record reflects a difficult start to the year, the margin of victory against a 6-2 Babson squad serves as a statistical indicator of the team’s rising ceiling.
Looking Ahead to Rhode Island
The Skyhawks will now transition from their home environment to a competitive road meet. Stonehill is scheduled to compete at the Harold Anderson Invitational in Rhode Island, which runs from November 19 through November 22. This upcoming invitational will serve as a primary test of whether the momentum gained from the Babson victory can be sustained against a broader field of competitors.
