Surprise Neighbors Track Down Woman Who Stole Halloween Decorations

A woman in Surprise, Arizona, is under investigation after security cameras captured her stealing Halloween decorations from multiple homes in a neighborhood near Loop 303 and Greenway Road. While some residents recovered their items by tracking the suspect to her home, others are still missing sentimental displays, and local police are currently attempting to make contact with the suspect.

It’s a scenario that feels more like a holiday movie than a police report, but for the residents of Surprise, the “Halloween Grinch” is a very real frustration. As FOX 10 Phoenix reported, the theft wasn’t a one-off incident but a calculated sweep of multiple yards in the middle of the night. For a community that takes immense pride in its seasonal displays, the loss wasn’t just about the dollar value of the plastic and animatronics—it was about a breach of sanctuary.

The Digital Trail to the Suspect

The recovery effort began not with a police siren, but with a social media post. Sydney Ostrander, one of the victims, discovered her decorations were gone and immediately turned to her security footage. The video revealed a woman visiting a neighbor’s house first before moving on to Ostrander’s property.

“She messed with the wrong person because I’m not going to just let it go,” Ostrander said. By posting the footage online, she ignited a chain reaction. Other neighbors began checking their own cameras and realized they had been hit by the same person. Chris Moffitt described the aftermath in his own yard, noting there were nothing left but “two pieces of rebar where the kid skeletons were.”

The investigation expanded beyond the immediate neighborhood when Summer Haas, a resident of El Mirage, recognized a Jeep from the security videos. Haas had spotted the same vehicle in her own neighborhood during the early morning hours, suggesting the suspect’s reach extended across city lines.

Neighbors Recover Stolen Decorations via Social Media

The neighbors bypassed official channels and used social media to identify the woman in the video. This digital sleuthing led them to a home just five minutes away from the targeted neighborhood. Upon arriving, they found a hoard of their stolen decorations sitting in the woman’s yard.

Although the suspect was not home at the time, a family member provided the victims with a blunt directive: take whatever belonged to them. While this provided some immediate relief, the resolution was incomplete. Many items, particularly those with sentimental value, remain missing.

The emotional toll of the theft has lingered longer than the loss of the physical objects. For these residents, the crime transformed their front yards from places of community joy into scenes of vulnerability.

“She invaded our personal space where we felt like we could be safe and at home,” Ostrander said.

Sharesa Uher-Moffitt echoed this sentiment, describing the feeling of having a stranger approach one’s property as “kind of scary.”

The Official Response

While the neighbors took matters into their own hands to recover their property, the Surprise Police Department is handling the legal side of the incident. Officers have visited the suspect’s residence twice, but they have yet to successfully make contact with her.

While the items may have been retrieved, the legal “justice” Sandra Dines hopes for remains pending.

The Surprise Police Department continues to investigate the thefts and is asking anyone with additional information to reach out to them directly.
