Fifteen-year-old Javits Frimpong was chased down and fatally shot in the Bronx on Thursday morning while on his way to school, an incident that has left the local community and New York City officials grappling with sudden violence.
The New York City Police Department received a report at about 9:24 a.m. on Thursday regarding a shooting near Corona Park in the Bronx, theguardian.com reported. Responding officers discovered the teenage boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach. Emergency responders transported Javits to a local hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
An Immigrant Family’s Journey Shattered
The tragedy struck just as Javits was marking his one-year anniversary in New York City after arriving from Ghana to reunite with his father, Thomas Frimpong. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the grieving father described his son as clever and quiet. According to Thomas Frimpong, Javits had been experiencing bullying at the DreamYard preparatory school, a situation that recently led the high school’s principal to suspend two students for harassing the teen.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. An NYPD spokesperson declined to comment on Friday regarding whether the reported harassment played any role in the fatal attack.
“I lost him,” Thomas Frimpong told reporters. “I don’t know what to do now.”
The Ongoing Manhunt and Surveillance Evidence
As of late Friday, law enforcement officials have made no arrests in connection with the shooting. The NYPD’s active investigation focuses on locating three teenage boys sought in connection to the homicide, theguardian.com noted.

Investigators are piecing together movements captured on nearby cameras. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Javits running down the street while a person dressed entirely in black trails closely behind him. Additional video angles appear to show masked individuals wearing dark clothing fleeing the scene immediately after the gunfire.
The West African community in the Bronx has been deeply shaken by the daylight attack, drawing strong condemnation from diplomatic leadership overseas. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s minister of foreign affairs, issued a statement on Friday vowing to pursue accountability. “We will pursue justice and we will make sure that those who did this do not get away with it,” he stated.
The Ghana diaspora public affairs collective, a United States-based non-profit organization, also released a statement Friday emphasizing the shattered aspirations of the family. “Just one year ago, Javits arrived in the United States from Ghana to reunite with his father and begin a new chapter of his life,” the group noted. “Like so many Ghanaian immigrant families, his family came together in America with hopes of greater opportunity, security, and a promising future. That future has now been violently taken away.”
