San Antonio Spurs forward Tobias Harris will miss the preseason and is questionable for the October 20 regular-season opener against Oklahoma City after suffering a left calf strain during training camp.
Tobias Harris sustained a strained left calf during training camp sessions. The newest addition to the San Antonio Spurs frontcourt faces an early hurdle. Team officials announced before tipoff of their intrasquad scrimmage that the 34-year-old veteran will miss the team’s five-game preseason schedule and did not participate in the annual Silver & Black Open Scrimmage at Frost Bank Center.
Spurs Evaluate Harris Timeline Ahead of Opening Night
Medical staff will reevaluate the power forward once the preseason slate concludes. Team officials listed Harris as questionable for the regular-season opener on Oct. 20 against Oklahoma City, which marks a rematch of the previous season’s Western Conference Finals.

The Spurs signed Harris to a two-year contract on July 6, bringing 8 seasons of NBA experience to South Texas. Before that stint, he signed a two-year, $52 million deal with Detroit in 2024 following six seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. In his second stint in Detroit, he averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds as the franchise rebounded from one of the league’s worst records to secure 60 victories and win a playoff series for the first time since 2008. Last season with the Detroit Pistons, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists across 27.7 minutes per game to help capture the Eastern Conference regular-season top spot.
Depth Options Behind Champagnie During Preseason
Julian Champagnie started last season for the club, and the roster also features rookie Jayden Quaintance, who is recovering from post-draft knee surgery addressing a persistent issue dating back to his freshman year at Arizona State. The newcomer was expected to claim a starting role to address the Western Conference champions’ primary need for size and offensive versatility at the power forward spot, though the franchise can afford to let him recover patiently thanks to depth pieces like Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, and Carter Bryant.

Keldon Johnson highlighted his leadership impact within a young locker room. Teammates have praised the veteran’s integration since his arrival at the Victory Capital Performance Center during Media Day.
Tobias is amazing. He's an amazing vet. His presence has been felt already being here. Great guy, humble guy. I'm glad and blessed to be able to have him as a teammate and be able to learn from him throughout this season.
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson also noted during Media Day preparations that the forward’s reputation precedes him both as a player and as a human being. Harris remarked that the fit with his new squad is all about how personalities and egos match, noting that it represents a perfect match for his career stage.
