A Shawnee County jury has found 57-year-old Tony Williams of Topeka guilty on all five charges connected to a series of shootings that left three people injured, according to a report.
Unanimous Verdict Follows Years of Court Delays
The verdict brings a measure of legal closure to an assault case that has wound through the Kansas courts for more than three years due to extended competency evaluations. Williams now faces sentencing proceedings following the jury’s unanimous decision.
Morning Gunfire Across Two Topeka Locations
The criminal case stems from a flurry of gunfire reported between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. on June 23, 2023. Investigators determined the violence unfolded across two separate Topeka locations: the 1800 block of Gage Boulevard and the 1000 block of Southwest Plass Avenue. Police officers apprehended Williams in the days following the incidents, which left three individuals with injuries.
Competency Rulings Stall Judicial Proceedings
Prosecutors filed formal charges shortly after the arrests, but the judicial process stalled in October 2023 when a court evaluation found Williams not competent to stand trial. The case remained paused for roughly two years until legal proceedings resumed in the fall of 2025, when a renewed evaluation declared him competent. Williams subsequently entered pleas of not guilty in December 2025, setting the stage for the recent trial.
Conviction on Severe Felony Counts
The jury convicted Williams on a slate of severe felony counts. Those charges include attempted murder in the first degree as an intentional and premeditated act, attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon, and two counts of aggravated battery for knowingly causing great bodily harm or disfigurement.
Upcoming Scheduling Conference
Court records indicate that Williams is scheduled to return to court on November 5 for a scheduling conference, where the next steps in the legal process will be determined.
