Two Dead in Fatal I-95 Crash in Howard County

Two lives lost in early morning I-95 collision

A violent two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 claimed the lives of two drivers in Howard County during the early hours of Saturday morning, according to reports from CBS News. The crash, which occurred in the Elkridge area, has left investigators looking closely at the roles that speed and alcohol may have played in the fatal encounter.

Maryland State Police troopers from the Waterloo Barrack arrived at the scene in the northbound lanes of I-95 just before 4:30 a.m. The investigation, which is being spearheaded by the Maryland State Police Crash Team, centers on a collision that involved two separate vehicles traveling in the same lane but on opposite sides of the highway.

The victims have been identified as 37-year-old Taleb Ait Zakariae of Rosedale and 47-year-old Timothy Summerville of Baltimore. Zakariae was operating a 2025 Jeep Gladiator traveling southbound, while Summerville was driving a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the northbound direction. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation focuses on speed and impairment

While the exact mechanics of the crash are still being parsed by forensic specialists, preliminary findings from the Maryland State Police suggest a devastating sequence of events. Investigators believe that both alcohol and high rates of speed contributed to the incident, which saw the two vehicles collide within the first lane of travel.

The severity of the crash necessitated significant emergency responses and long-term road closures. To facilitate the investigation, authorities closed all northbound lanes of I-95 and the first lane of the southbound side. While the northbound lanes have since been reopened to traffic, the scene required extensive coordination between multiple agencies.

The response included personnel from the following departments:

  • Maryland State Police (Lead investigation)
  • Howard County Police Department (Scene assistance)
  • Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (Traffic control and road closures)

For those traveling through the Elkridge corridor, these types of incidents highlight the ongoing safety challenges on one of Maryland’s most heavily trafficked transit arteries. The intersection of high-speed travel and early-morning visibility often creates a volatile environment for motorists.

The Maryland State Police continue to lead the formal inquiry into the accident to determine the definitive cause and the specific degree of impairment or velocity involved at the moment of impact.
