Traffic Stop Escalates on East Erie Avenue
Philadelphia police are actively searching for a suspect who injured two officers in North Philadelphia on Saturday evening while fleeing an attempted arrest following a traffic stop, NBC10 Philadelphia reported. The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. at the 300 block of East Erie Avenue.
Warrants Turn Routine Stop Into Felony Operation
According to Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace, an officer from the city’s 24th District pulled over a vehicle for traffic violations shortly before 5 p.m., as reported by 6abc.com. After running the vehicle information, officers discovered the driver was wanted on outstanding warrants, which escalated the interaction into a felony vehicle stop. A lieutenant and additional officers arrived at the scene to assist.
Struggle Ensues as Driver Breaks Free
Officers made contact with the driver and managed to place a handcuff on one of his wrists. The suspect then began to fight back, broke free, and jumped back inside the vehicle. As officers attempted to stop him from escaping, the driver accelerated away. One officer was struck by the car and thrown to the ground, while a lieutenant was thrown onto the roadway.
Hospitalization and Injuries Sustained
Both injured officers suffered road burns and abrasions. They were transported to a hospital for treatment and were expected to be released on Saturday, according to police. Officials noted that neither officer appeared to have suffered broken bones.
Active Manhunt and Handcuff Mystery
The suspect fled the scene before officers could complete the arrest. While police investigators have identified the man, they are withholding his name because the investigation remains active. Authorities reported that the suspect drove away with a handcuff still attached to one wrist, though it remains unclear whether the handcuff is still on him.
Back-to-Back Incidents Leave Description Withheld
Saturday’s incident occurred just one day after another Philadelphia police officer was struck by a vehicle during a separate incident in the city’s Germantown neighborhood. Police have not yet released a detailed description of the suspect in the North Philadelphia case as the search continues.
