Utah Beats Cincinnati 49-25 to Reach 8-0 Record

Utah opens fast and cruises past Cincinnati to reach 8-0

Morgan Scalley had Utah ready to play from the opening whistle, and Cincinnati spent the first half paying a heavy price for it. Delivering an emphatic statement on the road at Nippert Stadium, the Utes raced to a 42-6 halftime lead on Saturday, ultimately securing a 49-25 victory that pushed their record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Big 12 play.

The win keeps Utah’s unblemished season intact, though a sputtering second half provided the coaching staff with a lengthy list of corrections. Still, the damage was done early. The Utes scored touchdowns on their first four offensive possessions while adding two defensive scores to build an insurmountable cushion before the break.

Establishing terms on the ground and through the air

The tone of the afternoon was set during the game’s opening minutes. Utah’s defense forced an immediate three-and-out, paving the way for a patient, 12-play, 78-yard march that ended when Devon Dampier found Hunter Andrews for a 4-yard touchdown. Even after Cincinnati answered with a field goal, the Utes simply rolled right back down the field, traveling 75 yards before Wayshawn Parker punched it in from 13 yards out.

By the end of the first quarter, Utah held a 14-3 advantage. Dampier put together a masterclass of efficiency in the first two quarters, completing 15 of 16 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns while the ground game churned out 193 yards. The offense operated flawlessly without ever having to punt before halftime.

Parker led the rushing attack with 82 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries, while Dampier finished the afternoon completing 22 of 29 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns, and a single interception, alongside 45 yards on the ground.

Emerging playmakers share the workload

Depth proved to be Utah’s greatest weapon as Daniel Bray and Hunter Andrews stepped forward to diversify the offense. Bray injected an immediate spark on the very first offensive snap with an 18-yard run, later adding a 30-yard rushing touchdown and a 3-yard scoring reception to account for two touchdowns before intermission.

Andrews proved equally difficult for the Cincinnati defense to track down. His 14-yard catch on third-and-5 kept the game’s opening drive alive, and he capped it with his touchdown grab. Later in the contest, after Cincinnati trimmed the deficit to 42-19, Andrews delivered the definitive answer. Facing a crucial third-and-7, Dampier found Andrews over the middle for a 59-yard touchdown that pushed the lead back out to 30 points. Andrews finished with five catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Defense and third downs seal the first-half rout

Utah’s ability to capitalize on crucial moments defined the opening half. The Utes converted all four of their third-down opportunities before the break, while the defense capitalized directly on Cincinnati miscues.

Early in the second quarter, Ethan Day forced a fumble from Gi’Bran Payne. Rabbit Evans scooped up the loose ball and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 21-3. Just before the halftime whistle blew, Elijah Davis added a 39-yard interception return for another score, putting an exclamation point on a dominant half.

While the second half told a different story—featuring 19-7 scoring in favor of Cincinnati and a pair of Utah turnovers after the break, including a 79-yard interception return by Jacob Finley—the early separation proved more than enough to preserve the win. Scalley and his staff now turn their attention toward fixing those late-game lulls as the schedule marches deeper into the conference slate.
