The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s RN-BSN Gateway Program has earned the No. 3 spot in RNtoMSN.org’s 2027 ranking of the best online RN to BSN programs in Tennessee. The 100% online program is designed for registered nurses seeking to advance their careers, move into leadership roles, or prepare for graduate education.
Ranking Criteria and Program Structure
RNtoMSN.org utilized a weighted algorithm to evaluate online programs, factoring in admission rates, completion rates, median earnings, and debt rates. The UTC program allows students to complete 22 nursing credit hours over 12 months, spanning three semesters.
The curriculum includes coursework in community health nursing, health assessment, leadership, nursing research, pathophysiology, and professional nursing. Students also complete a culminating senior experience and a community health clinical experience. To support remote learners, the program provides an online orientation, professional academic advising, and faculty availability via email, phone, and virtual appointments.
Career Advancement and Accessibility
Dr. Brooke Epperson, associate dean of the UTC College of Nursing, noted that the program’s design focuses on accessibility for those balancing professional and family duties. “I think what that designation says about our program is that we’re accessible to working nurses,” Epperson said. “We have figured out how to create a program and an environment that’s conducive to their learning, but also allows these working nurses to maintain a full-time job.”
Epperson, who graduated from the program in 2010 to prepare for a nurse manager role, described the curriculum as a “stepping stone” for nurses aiming for graduate school or leadership positions. She noted that the skills gained in research, professionalism, and leadership help associate degree-prepared nurses develop the abilities needed to support long-term professional goals.
Admissions and Enrollment
New cohorts for the RN-BSN Gateway Program begin every August. Prospective students must submit their applications by June 15 for fall admission.
