Villanova Defeats UConn 2-1 to End Huskies’ BIG EAST Streak

Villanova edges UConn to end Huskies’ 2026 soccer campaign

The loss at the Higgins Sports Complex leaves UConn with a 4-5-9 overall record and a 2-3-5 mark in BIG EAST Conference play, according to a report from uconnhuskies.com.

The result carries significant weight for the program’s standing in the conference. With only 11 points earned during the season, UConn failed to secure one of the four spots required to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship, which is scheduled to take place next week in Boyds, Maryland. This absence from the postseason marks a notable shift in the program’s recent history; it is the first time the Huskies will miss their conference championship tournament since their final season in The American Conference in 2019.

The match was a contest of shifting momentum and missed opportunities. Villanova, who entered the match with a 12-1-5 record and a 7-1-2 conference standing, took the lead in the 69th minute via a successful penalty kick from Amalia Cardo. UConn responded ten minutes later when Anya Montano scored her first career goal. The equalizer came off a corner kick served by Maree-Anne Van Doesburg, who sent a ball into the box that Anaya Johnson headed into the air, allowing Montano to volley it into the net.

The brief parity did not last. In the 84th minute, Morgan Kotch found the back of the net for the Wildcats to reclaim the lead. UConn pushed for a final equalizer in the closing minutes, most notably when Ines Nourani fired a shot from inside the box that struck the post and deflected away in the 87th minute. Despite the narrow margin of defeat, the Huskies controlled several statistical categories, holding a 10-9 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

A streak ends in the BIG EAST

Beyond the immediate disappointment of missing the tournament, the loss highlights a breakdown in a previously dominant era of conference play. Before this season, the Huskies had maintained a streak of seven consecutive BIG EAST Championship appearances. The last time the program was absent from the conference tournament was back in 2011.

The 2026 campaign was defined by a struggle to find footing outside of Storrs. The Huskies finished the year with an 0-4-5 record in away games, a statistic that proved difficult to overcome in a competitive conference landscape. While the offense showed flashes of brilliance—evidenced by the tactical sequence leading to Montano’s first career goal—the inability to close out matches on the road ultimately dictated the season’s trajectory.

Team Overall Record BIG EAST Record Points
Villanova 12-1-5 7-1-2 —
UConn 4-5-9 2-3-5 11

The implications of this season extend to the recruiting and developmental cycles of the program. Missing a championship tournament often alters the visibility of student-athletes and the momentum of a coaching staff. For UConn, the transition from the stability of the 2019-2025 era to this current standing represents a period of recalibration within the BIG EAST.

The BIG EAST Championship begins next week in Boyds, Maryland, where the top four teams will compete for the conference title.
