Virginia National Guard Soldiers Conduct Route Reconnaissance Training

Virginia National Guard conducts route reconnaissance at Fort Barfoot

Soldiers from the Virginia National Guard completed intensive route reconnaissance training at Fort Barfoot, Virginia, on February 8, 2025, according to a report from DVIDS. The exercise focused on the specialized capabilities of Charlie Troop, 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, a unit based out of Virginia Beach and part of the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The training served as a rigorous assessment of platoon proficiency. By simulating field conditions, the maneuvers were designed to push the physical and mental limits of the participating Soldiers. This level of preparation is essential for identifying operational weaknesses in a controlled environment before they manifest during actual missions.

Testing stamina and field readiness

Capt. Ian A. Kilpatrick, the troop commander, noted that the primary objective of the training was to test Soldier stamina. The reconnaissance drills require high levels of coordination and endurance as platoons navigate terrain to gather intelligence and ensure route security. Identifying gaps in performance during these sessions allows the unit to refine its tactics and ensure the personnel are better prepared for future deployments.

Route reconnaissance is a critical component of cavalry operations. It involves the systematic movement of troops to determine the suitability of roads or paths for larger military movements, checking for obstacles, and assessing the security of the area. For a unit like the 183rd Cavalry Regiment, mastering these skills is a fundamental requirement for maintaining operational readiness within the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The training at Fort Barfoot provides a localized setting for these complex maneuvers, allowing the Virginia Beach-based troops to practice high-stakes reconnaissance in varied terrain. These exercises ensure that the transition from training environments to active mission sets is as seamless as possible, minimizing the risks associated with unexpected field variables.
