Vote for Argus Leader Athlete of the Week from Oct. 26-31

We are right in the thick of that autumn window where South Dakota high school football fields are clearing out fast, and the volleyball courts are sprinting toward their own dramatic conclusions. As the postseason brackets tighten, the regional conversation inevitably turns to individual brilliance on both the gridiron and the hardwood.

According to the latest rundown published by argusleader.com, the nominees for the Argus Leader high school Athletes of the Week for the stretch of Oct. 26-31 have officially been locked in. Readers across the region have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, to cast their ballots and decide who takes home the weekly honors.

Gridiron Standouts Dominate the Boys Ballot

The boys’ side of the ballot reads like a masterclass in playoff dominance, starting down in Harrisburg where senior back David Doe gave defenders fits from the opening whistle. Doe ignited Harrisburg’s 41-24 victory by taking the very first play from scrimmage 67 yards to the house. By the time the dust settled, he had quietly racked up 201 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 attempts, while also hauling in an 11-yard reception.

Up the road in Brandon Valley, senior linebacker Miles Fokken was everywhere during the Lynx’s 42-0 quarterfinal shutout against Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Fokken wreaked havoc in the backfield all night long, turning in a nine-tackle performance that included two crucial sacks.

Over on the interior line, Tea Area junior Thiik Lual made life miserable for opposing offenses despite a tough 31-14 postseason loss to Sturgis. Lual lived in the backfield, recording five total tackles, three of which went for a loss, including a sack.

Meanwhile, Sioux Falls Lincoln put on an offensive clinic in a 42-7 dismantling of Sioux Falls Washington in the 11AAA quarterfinals. Senior wide receiver Everett Starks proved virtually unguardable, pulling in five receptions for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Rounding out the defensive nominees on the boys’ side, Sioux Falls Jefferson junior linebacker Dax Wachal continued his team’s strong defensive form in a 52-10 blowout over Rapid City Central. Wachal anchored the Cavaliers with a team-high seven tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a forced fumble.

Hardwood Stars Shine in Postseason Volleyball

The girls’ ballot shifts the spotlight squarely to the volleyball court, where postseason pressure has brought out the best in the area’s top players. Sioux Falls Lincoln junior middle blocker Elsa Basel commanded the center of the floor in a swift 3-0 sweep of Sioux Falls Roosevelt, putting down 11 kills to go with two digs.

Brandon Valley senior outside hitter Jersie Melcher kept things humming with a remarkably well-rounded performance in a sweep of Mitchell, collecting eight kills, eight digs, and four aces. Down the road, Harrisburg senior McKinnley Munce locked down the middle during a pair of dominant sweeps, tallying 10 kills and five blocks against Dakota Valley before returning with nine kills and six blocks against Yankton.

Sioux Falls Washington leaned heavily on senior Chloe Peterson during a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Watertown. Peterson delivered on both sides of the ball, totaling 14 kills, five digs, three blocks, and two aces.

Perhaps the night’s most dramatic finish came when O’Gorman outlasted Sioux Falls Jefferson 3-2. Creighton commit Ruthie Robinson came up clutch repeatedly under immense pressure, pacing the Knights with 18 kills, three aces, three digs, and two blocks in the narrow victory.
