West Indies Defeat India in Fourth T20I

West Indies leveled the five-match T20I series at 2-2 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, defeating India by 24 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Captain Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 102 off 50 balls, while Keemo Paul claimed five wickets for 41 runs to halt India’s chase.

West Indies captain Shai Hope continued his prolific tour of India by recording his second T20I century of the series and his fourth overall across formats. Entering the match after winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors piled up an imposing total of 247 for three in their 20 overs. Hope anchored the innings with an aggressive yet controlled knock of 102 not out from 50 balls, striking four boundaries and nine sixes to finish with a strike rate exceeding 204. His effort placed him second to Chris Gayle for the most 50-plus scores for West Indies in the format.

The visiting side capitalized on the batting-friendly surface at Uppal right from the opening over. Jewel Andrew attacked the new ball against Arshdeep Singh, laying the foundation for a rapid powerplay surge. By the end of the mandatory fielding restrictions, West Indies had raced to 79 for one, matching New Zealand’s record for the highest powerplay score against India in T20Is. Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with a blistering 33 off just 12 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford added late fireworks with an unbeaten 49 off 26 deliveries, propelling the total past the 240-run mark.

Keemo Paul’s Five-Wicket Haul Derails India’s Chase

Chasing a target of 248, India was given a strong start by Sanju Samson, who smashed his joint-fastest T20I fifty in just 20 deliveries. Samson raced to 56 off 23 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes while reaching his milestone of 100 sixes in T20I cricket. India reached 80 runs within the first six overs, keeping pace with the required run rate.

The momentum shifted abruptly when West Indies turned to pace-bowling all-rounder Keemo Paul in the fifth over. Paul immediately dismantled the top order by removing Samson, who holed out to Hetmyer, and dismissing Ishan Kishan for six on successive plays. Paul became the first visiting bowler to take a five-wicket haul against India in T20 internationals, finishing with figures of 5 for 41.

From the batters’ perspective, the message we got after the first five overs was that it was a pretty good wicket. One or two balls were gripping, but other than that, it was pretty good. As bowlers, the slower balls helped us here. On other wickets and at other grounds, we haven’t been getting much grip, but it worked here.

Spin also played a restrictive role for the visitors. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie conceded only 13 runs across two overs, removing Abhishek Sharma and Naman Dhir in the same over to apply a severe brake on India’s scoring rate.

Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy Fight Back in Vain

With India reeling at 122 needed from the final nine overs, middle-order batters Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy attempted a rescue mission. The pair stitched together a resilient 70-run partnership off 32 balls to breathe life into the home crowd. Varma contributed 43 from 25 deliveries before falling to Romario Shepherd, while Reddy struck an aggressive 41 off 20 balls, including four sixes.

However, the required run rate proved insurmountable once Paul returned to the attack. Paul bowled Reddy in the penultimate over and cleaned up the tail to complete his historic five-for. India’s innings concluded at 223 all out in 19.3 overs after Arshdeep Singh retired hurt following a blow to his arm, leaving the hosts 24 runs short.
