Win a Survival Bunker: Columbia Sportswear Launches Don’t Panic Room Contest

Columbia Sportswear Launches Survival Bunker Contest Mocking Tech Billionaires

When the world falls apart, tech billionaires plan to sit it out in underground shelters or remote New Zealand hideaways. Columbia Sportswear is poking fun at those escape plans with the “Don’t Panic Room,” a fully stocked survival bunker you can actually win. No billionaire bank balance is required to enter, just a bit of outdoor ingenuity.

From Oct. 28 until Nov. 24, adults in the contiguous United States can post videos showing off how they would survive, competing for a converted 40-foot shipping container fitted for off-grid living and filled with Columbia apparel, footwear, and equipment. The official contest rules add $35,000 to the prize. The trailer is live on YouTube, starring Chief Executive Tim Boyle as the deadpan face of the brand’s latest marketing stunt.

Inside the Off-Grid Shipping Container

“We’ve been making gear for bad weather and other unfortunate moments for almost 90 years,” said Tim Boyle, CEO of Columbia Sportswear. “We’ve seen it all and we figured we’d offer our fans a chance to overcome the absolute worst that can happen in the outdoors. Hopefully the winner never needs the ‘Don’t Panic Room,’ but we made sure they’ll be warm and dry if the world does go to sh*t.”

Inside the modified 40-foot by eight-foot container delivered directly to the winner, the space features a bunk bed, a kitchenette with a dining corner, a bathroom, and shelves stocked with survival gear and tools. For companionship, the bunker includes a robotic dog named Rocky. To arm occupants for adventures outside, a full Columbia section includes rows of canned jackets and gear.

“When you envision a classic bunker, it’s lined with rows and rows of cans to be opened in an emergency,” said Chris Araujo, senior director of Columbia Brand Creative. “The idea of sealing one of our puffer jackets in a can works really well. It’s canned heat! You can simply pop one open to help keep warm in the event of an unexpected ice age.”

Jackets such as the Terwilliger Trail Heat Seal Hooded Jacket are ready to be opened when the weather takes a turn. The apparel features Omni-Heat Infinity, Columbia’s patented heat-reflective technology inspired by emergency blankets. The bunker is additionally stocked with several pairs of footwear, including the Tellurix Titanium OutDry Mid, a technical waterproof shoe designed for unexpected conditions.

A History of Absurdist Marketing Stunts

The campaign extends a marketing platform that has turned Columbia into a regular source of absurdist activations. Ant Nelson, chief creative officer at adam&eveTBWA, noted that the project embodies the brand platform “Engineered For Whatever,” celebrating ingenuity, irreverence, and a spirit of adventure.

Earlier in the year, the brand brewed a beer from bear scat ingredients rather than buy a Super Bowl spot. In April, two films tested spring and summer gear against a year of rain and a flamethrower. In June, “Expedition Impossible” dared flat-earthers to photograph the edge of the planet in exchange for a tongue-in-cheek prize of everything the company owned, taking home the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Brand Experience and Activation with an earned reach of 80 million people.

The contest runs as Columbia works to shore up domestic sales. US sales fell 10 percent in the first quarter even as EMEA grew 35 percent, extending a domestic slump that weighed on full-year 2025. Footwear remains the fastest-growing category, sitting at the heart of the Accelerate strategy aimed at younger consumers, which explains the prominent placement of hiking shoes on the bunker shelves.

Participants can submit videos showcasing their survival skills through Instagram or by visiting columbia.com/bunker. Entries close on November 24, 2026, two days before Thanksgiving.
