WPI wrestling finished second at the Rhode Island College Invitational and Schwartz Report New England Showdown this past Saturday, starting the season with high energy.
The Engineers tallied 140.5 points, placing them behind The College of New Jersey, which led the field with 220.5 points, while staying ahead of third-place Oneonta at 131 points.
According to the official results from WPI Athletics, the squad’s performance was anchored by senior Lucas Marchese, who claimed runner-up honors in the 157-pound weight class. Marchese’s path to the championship bout was defined by a mix of explosive offense and tactical resilience, highlighted by a 32-second fall against Oneonta’s Matthew Sarter in his opening match.
He continued his momentum with a 6-2 quarterfinal victory over Rhode Island College’s Aiden Mantia and a 15-8 decision against TCNJ’s Ahmed Hussain, though he ultimately fell to Oneonta’s Kingston Strouse in the final.
Marchese finished first, while the Engineers' team score benefited from several individual placewinners. The team produced 17 wrestlers who placed in the top eight of their respective brackets. Among the standout performances were Coleson Tully at 133 pounds, Joe Tully at 174 pounds, and Jordin Agosto at 149 pounds, all of whom secured third-place finishes.
The competition at 133 pounds proved particularly illustrative of the team’s internal strength. Coleson Tully rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to win in the consolation bracket, eventually meeting teammate Maddox Rosenblatt in the third-place match. Tully secured the win with a 19-4 technical fall at the 4:30 mark. Rosenblatt, who pinned Oneonta’s Konnor Rosenzweig in just 77 seconds earlier in the day, rounded out a successful outing for the WPI lightweights.
Jordin Agosto’s third-place finish at 149 pounds provided perhaps the most dramatic narrative of the day. After an early quarterfinal defeat, Agosto embarked on a four-match winning streak. His path back to the podium included two pins, a medical forfeit victory, and a dominant 19-4 technical fall against TCNJ’s Ethan Kerlin in the third-place match.
At 174 pounds, Joe Tully used a 4-1 record and three pins to secure his spot on the podium. His ability to finish matches quickly was on display throughout the day, including a 1:21 pin over Roger Williams’ Brian Schreck and a 2:37 pin over New England College’s Joseph Bolduc. These individual efforts were critical in maintaining the point gap between WPI and the rest of the field as the tournament progressed.
The Engineers also scored points in the middle and upper weight classes. Luke Coelho placed fifth at 165 pounds, while Alex McKenzie took fifth at 184 pounds. Other notable performances included sixth-place finishes for Mason Medina at 141 pounds, Luke Baisley at 165 pounds, Leo Trejos at 125 pounds, Braiden Bagloe at 197 pounds, and Brendan Woytowich in the heavyweight division.
As the collegiate wrestling season gains momentum, the focus for the Engineers now shifts to the Racich Rumble. Hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, the event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on November 14. The team prepares to face new regional challengers in Pennsylvania after this early-season success at Rhode Island College.
