Rich Rodriguez Addresses Defensive Woes After 53-48 Loss to Texas Tech
West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Rich Rodriguez did not mince words following his team’s 53-48 defeat against the No. 15 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday night.
In comments provided to Sports Illustrated, the veteran coach characterized his team’s defensive performance in the first half as "gross" and "ridiculous," expressing frustration with the execution that ultimately cost the Mountaineers the game.
The loss creates a major obstacle for West Virginia, as the team struggled to contain a high-powered Texas Tech offense. While the Mountaineers managed to hold the Red Raiders to just 10 points in the second half, the damage from the opening two quarters proved insurmountable.
Rodriguez noted that the defensive struggles were not merely a result of talent, but of missed assignments and a lack of proper preparation for the deep ball.
“You got to play better, coach better to win. I mean, the defense was gross, first half. I mean, it’s just gross,” Rodriguez said. “And they played better in the second half, but we didn’t play the deep ball, and probably need to work on it more in practice, in my opinion, but that’s pretty obvious. But you can’t stop ‘em.”
The Pressure of Perpetual Offense
For Rodriguez, the most taxing aspect of the current season is the mounting pressure on his offense to maintain a perfect pace. Because the defense has struggled to force stops, every offensive possession has become a high-stakes scenario. He admitted that in his long coaching career, he has rarely experienced a season where the margin for error was so razor-thin.
“It’s ridiculous. I’ve never, in all my years of coaching, I can’t ever remember it being this way, where every possession was so critical because in every game because you can’t stop them,” he stated.
When asked if he considered slowing down the tempo to give his defensive unit more time to rest, Rodriguez was dismissive. He argued that slowing the game down would contradict his team’s identity and ultimately prove ineffective. The solution, he insisted, remains singular: better defensive play.
Reflecting on Late-Game Decisions
The game’s outcome was shaped by several narrow misses, including a critical failure to convert on third-and-one in the fourth quarter. Rodriguez expressed regret over his decision-making during that sequence, acknowledging that in hindsight, he likely should have been more aggressive.
“They stopped it. I thought about going for it. Probably should have in hindsight. I probably would’ve went for it on fourth down,” he admitted. The Mountaineers also struggled with a safety on their final drive, an error Rodriguez attributed to a breakdown in execution rather than strategy.
“We just got to get rid of the ball. I mean, we had a quick game on, and Mike [Hawkins Jr.] is just a competitive guy trying to make a play, but we just got to get rid of it.”
Looking Ahead to the Final Stretch
Despite the frustration, there were moments of individual brilliance, such as sophomore receiver Taron Francis, who recorded three receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown, and freshman Matt Sieg, whose 75-yard punt return was described by Rodriguez as one of the game’s biggest plays. However, these bright spots were overshadowed by the team’s defensive failures in the open field and their inability to secure interceptions during key moments.
Rodriguez emphasized that while he intends to remain angry for the mandated 24-hour period, the team must quickly pivot toward the final three games of the season. The challenge remains to improve defensive consistency and maintain the focus required to compete at this level.
As the Mountaineers head home to review the film, the reality of the loss is clear: without a major defensive adjustment, the team faces a difficult path forward.
