The South Dakota Highway Patrol led the October 21–22 enforcement effort as part of Operation Prairie Thunder, a statewide initiative that pools local, county, and federal personnel to boost community safety. Of the 14 individuals taken into custody within Box Elder, exactly half faced drug-related offenses while the remaining seven were arrested on separate charges, according to kotatv.com. The drug caseload broke down into eight felonies and 11 misdemeanors.

Beyond the arrests, officers issued 63 citations and 53 warnings during the two-day sweep. Five drivers were cited specifically for operating vehicles with revoked licenses.

Statewide Scale of Operation Prairie Thunder

Operation Prairie Thunder relies on shared agency resources and increased visibility across South Dakota communities. Since the statewide program officially launched in August 2025, authorities have carried out 15 separate operations across 12 communities.

Operation Prairie Thunder has been conducted in communities across South Dakota, including Sturgis, Hot Springs, and Belle Fourche. Across all 15 operations since August 2025, the cumulative totals have climbed to 484 arrests, more than 1,200 drug charges, 277 warrants served, and 42 DUI arrests alongside more than 2,400 total citations issued.

State officials maintain that the multi-agency framework is designed to bridge jurisdictional gaps between local departments and federal entities, sharpening enforcement in areas where regional visibility needs reinforcement.
